    Falklands: proposed second flight and stop in Argentina dominates public meeting debate

    LATAM flight once a week at MPA

    A lively exchange took place during the Falkland Islands March 12 public meeting in which the proposed second commercial flight to a third country with a stop in Argentina was considered. The public was particularly interested in knowing if any “red lines” had been established and wanted confirmation that one of the stop options was not to be Buenos Aires.

    Falklands' second weekly commercial air link talks take off, and should crystallize by next October

    MLA Dr Barry Elsby said it was a very positive step forward for the Falklands, since “the additional flight will help us to improve our links with the world at large”

    The United Kingdom and Argentina, following on the September 2016 joint communiqué to establish additional air links with the Falkland Islands, jointly announced on Friday that third country airlines interested in such operations will be contacted. It is expected that by the end of February the commercial process will be initiated, led by the Falkland Islands, and sometime next October the new weekly air link, with a monthly call in Argentina, will become operational.

    Falklands' newly elected Legislative Assembly anticipates lively debate

    MLA Teslyn Barkman waxed enthusiastic about the youth and energy to be found in the Assembly’s members and MLA Bragger talked about “a different dynamic.”

    Five of the eight members of the Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly, were elected for the first time only three working days before their first formal appearance in the Town Hall on Monday morning. With this in mind, the business to be brought before the chamber is normally routine and unlikely to require much in the way of discussion.

    Residents of the Falkland Islands went to the polls yesterday, with results released earlier this morning. Seventeen candidates stood for election to the Legislative Assembly and have campaigned over the past month to be elected to office.

    Falklands appoints Headteacher of Community School

    As Headteacher, Neil Appleby led a secondary school of 850 pupils in a challenging, northeast coastal area for 6 years, until 2016.

    The Falkland Islands Government has announced the appointment of Neil Appleby as the new Headteacher for the Falkland Islands Community School. Neil was born in Basingstoke in the South of England and within eleven years he and his family made their way North to County Durham.

    The Falklands and the efforts to clear minefields left by the Argentine invasion in 1982, which have become de facto nature reserves for penguins, will be aired on BBC Radio 4 under the heading of “Listen to Exploding Penguins”, presented by Peter Gibbs and produced by Matthew Teller. The presentation will be Tuesday 9 May at 15:30 UK time.

    Darby wants to meet new people, seeing what it is to live in Uruguay and learning the language

    Falkland Islander Darby Newman (15) will have the opportunity to spend over a month in Uruguay on a student exchange program. Darby applied for, and was awarded, the scholarship offered to a Falklands student by the American Field Service (AFS).
