    Mass mortality among farmed salmon in world's main producing countries, scientific report

    The report identified 865 million instances of salmon mortality between 2012 and 2022, that mortality increased throughout the decade.

    The frequency and scale of mass mortality events among farmed salmon have increased since 2012, according to a study published in Scientific Reports. In the paper from the University of Victoria, British Columbia, School of Environmental Studies, researcher Gerald Singh and colleagues analyzed salmon mortality data from Norway, Canada, the UK, Chile, Australia, New Zealand — countries that produced over 92% of the world’s farmed salmon in 2021 — between 2012 and 2022.

    Massive mortality of Atlantic salmon species in south Chilean farms

    Marine Farm first reported the mortality of ten thousand fish with an average weight of 4.3 kg, which were affected by the presence of the Cochlodinium sp.(*)

    The Marine Farm company notified Chile's National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service, SERNAPESCSA of massive mortality of fish of the Atlantic salmon species. The event took place at the Mellimoyu center (110899), located at ACS 34 in the Aysén region.

    Salmon farms in Scotland raided in connection to EU-wide probe into alleged illegal cartels

    The Scottish sites visited have Norwegian links including Marine Harvest, rebranded as Mowi, in Rosyth, Scottish Sea Farms in Stirling and Grieg Seafood

    Raids have been carried out at several salmon farming sites in Scotland in connection with an EU-wide probe into alleged illegal cartels. Officials visited offices in Shetland, Stirling and Fife amid concerns they may have violated anti-trust rules. The European Commission (EC) has said the investigation is at a preliminary stage.

    Chinese group targets Chile's Australis Seafoods salmon farms: offers US$ 880m

    Australis farmed 64,000 metric tons of salmon in 2017, representing 9% of Chile's total production. It reported sales of US$ 399 million in 2017

    China's Joyvio Group, subsidiary of the Chinese conglomerate Legend Holdings Corporation, has put in an offer to buy 100% of shares of Chile's Australis Seafoods for a price of US$ 880 million. The acquisition is subject to compliance and must be completed no later than April 2019.
