    At least eleven people died and many others needed to be evacuated this weekend after heavy rains hit Rio de Janeiro causing severe flooding and damage to numerous houses that were left under water. The Federal Government decreed a maximum alert. The risk of further flooding and landslides remains very high, it was also explained.

    Fallen trees result in two deaths in Uruguay amid storm

    Winds reached gusts of 160 kilometers per hour in Colonia del Sacramento

    Uruguayan authorities confirmed Sunday that at least two people were killed in the city of Colonia del Sacramento as a result of the heavy storm hitting the area. Heavy rains and material damages were also reported in Montevideo, Durazno, Canelones, and other southern areas.

    El Salvador bore the brunt of Amanda, which triggered flash floods, landslides and power outages as it ripped into poor Central American states.

    Emergency workers were searching for seven people still missing Monday as El Salvador and its Central American neighbors picked through the destruction after the first-named Pacific storm of the year left at least 18 people dead.

    84% of Rockhopper chicks on Sea Lion Island have died as a result of a storm that hit the Falkland Islands on January 14/15. Strong easterly winds on the island, which lies southeast of East Falklands, launched sea spray on to the colony for more than 48 hours, to deadly effect, said owner Mickey Reeves.

    Cuba: Three dead and 170 injured after tornado passage through Havana

    A man and his teenage son died with electrocution during a storm that struck Buenos Aires City and the metropolitan area on Sunday dawn and morning. Winds blowing at over 130 kilometers and massive rainfall, 120 millimeters, caused the collapse of roofs and publicity billboards, trees and lamp posts were knocked down, plus extensive flooding and power cuts that affected thousands of clients. An estimated 2.500 people had to be evacuated and even more had to abandon their homes.

    Northeast US and Canada frigid with wind chills reaching negative C 50 degrees

    New York Times reporters who were sent to Mount Washington in that state said the wind “steals your breath and freezes your eyelashes.”

    The aftermath of a frigid “bomb cyclone” and polar vortex left much of the northeastern US and Canada frigid on Friday night. Wind chills in one part of the state of New Hampshire were forecast to hit negative 50 degrees Celsius, according to forecasters.
