    South Atlantic air bridge rerouted temporarily; repairs to the Ascension Island runway

    Ascension Island is the normal call for the Brize Norton/MPA air bridge

    It's going to be a busny winter for the Falkland Islands. The government has announced that due to repairs required to the Ascension Island runway, the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) is temporarily rerouting the South Atlantic Airbridge via an alternative location. The UK air bridge from Brize Norton to the Falklands normally calls at Ascension Island both ways.

    Dr. Dao incident makes United Airlines chane policy on last minute seats for staff

    Law enforcement officials dragged Dr Dao off a flight departing from Chicago because it was fully booked, and the airline wanted seats for staff members.

    United Airlines is changing its policy on giving staff last-minute seats on full flights after a man was dragged screaming from an overbooked plane. The airline said that in future crew members would be allocated seats at least an hour before departure.

    Falklands review tourist season and discuss shortcomings and improvements

    Mrs. Middleton opened the session by giving updates on a few issues that had come up in the last year

    Falkland Islands Tourist Board chairman Mike Rendell and Interim CEO Steph Middleton welcomed a large group of interested parties to the Chamber of Commerce last week for an informal end of tourist season ‘washup.’ Topics raised ranged from perennial issues such as easy access to the Totem Pole for tourists, to newer developments such as what to do with the new jetty.

    Chile expands Patagonia national parks with Tompkins Foundation donation

    The Tompkins Foundation of one million acres will help form a network of 17 national parks along Patagonia that spans most of Chile.

    Chile set aside 11 million acres of land for national parks aided by the largest private land donation from a private entity to a country. The conservation effort of the Tompkins Foundation helped pave the way for Chile to greatly expand its conservation of the pristine Patagonia wilderness.

    Brazil planning concession auctions for another ten airports

    However the airports of Guarulhos (São Paulo), Santos Dumont (Rio de Janeiro), Manaus and Curitiba are most likely to remain under state administration

    Brazilian Minister of Planning, Development and Management, Dyogo Oliveira said the government is considering awarding concession contracts with the private sector for at least another ten airports. Potential terminals include Goiânia, Vitória and Recife, according to the minister.

    Positive outcome of ASSI visit to St Helena Airport

    The St Helena airport has received an ASSI endorsed certification of Air Traffic Services for a twelve month period from 3 April 2017

    Senior Aerodrome Inspector, Justin Rothwell, and Air Traffic Services Inspector, Sarah Lee, from Air Safety Support International (ASSI), the regulator for St Helena Airport, visited the Island recently. The purpose of their visit, according to an official release from the Overseas Territory, was to undertake an audit to consider the extension of the certification of St Helena Airport.

    Norwegian Sky planning 33 roundtrips to Cuba from Miami in 2018

    These new cruises will begin on March 26, 2018 and are in addition to the previously announced 30 calls that Norwegian will offer through December 2017.

    Norwegian Sky will sail 33 roundtrip cruises from Miami to Cuba in 2018, with 32 voyages featuring an overnight call in the capital city of Havana as well as a call on Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian’s private island in the Bahamas.

    Falklands begins process for new port facilities to support economic growth

    The Executive Council approved a temporary, immediate augmentation of FIPASS capacity, at least until the end of 2018.

    The Falkland Islands has approved the commencement of work that will lead to the delivery of new port facilities to support economic growth into the next decade. According to a release from the Falklands elected government, the new work will build on the substantial previous studies completed in 2012 and 2014, which investigated the viability of various sites, and resources are expected to be allocated during the 2017/18 budget process.

It is driven by a detailed database of accommodation, restaurants, shops, attractions and events, which allows us to make changes and keep it fresh on a regular basis.
