Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Garcia Margallo has sent a letter to his UK counterpart William Hague responding to Prime Minister David Cameron’s remarks on self-determination. Read full article
You would think, that with 4,000 mainland Spanish employed in Gibraltar and 1 in 4 (5M+) unemployed on mainland Espana that the Spanish Govt. would STFU and not risk losing those jobs by sabre rattling ala Argentina.
I'm sorry but Cameron is proving to be an ornery tyro in international diplomacy, giving CFK a run at the title (though she has enjoyed 5 years of experience and failed to evolve).
You would assume that the concatenation of supercilious remarks by Cameron during the last six months were butressed by being the chief executive of a world superpower... Who uses language like his in making commentary anyway? Not Merkel, not Sarkozy, not Monti, not Medvedev, not Hu Jintao, not even Obama.
First he virtually bade the EU to involve Britain in decision-making votes of the Euro-zone in the original summit to deal with the continent's economic crises, when they are not part of it. Germany and France were decidedly not impressed with his presumptuousness (his attitude is the problem and not his policies, which if he believes are in the best interest of his country are to be deemed honorable); Merkozy promptly hardened their positions and in a subsequent summit, introduced the infamous financial transaction tax and permitted no negotiations on its implementation, fully cognizant Cameron would be forced into a corner to either accede or publicly reject.
Then with the Falklands, he (his foreign office), released a curt communiqué objurgating South American countries for standing together, and inviting them to disband with alacrity from their joint position calling it unbecoming of democracies. Again, even if Britain is right in their portrayal of the situation, you do not bruit it about in such a castigating fashion! You let the individual governments know through back door channels. Result? Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia all re-affirmed their commitment to their diplomatic course, as otherwise it would have been interpreted as a backing down in the face of chastening rhetoric. With Spain, he doubles-down.
The problem is that Britain is not a superpower, nor can it really go it alone. These may be emollient words short-term, long-term they are myopic.
But seriously, Spain to is in turmoil, and they to have massive problems, and they to wish to elevate their public discourse by getting shifty with Gibraltar,
A country that demands Gibraltar, yet retains overseas territories does it not ,
She to is looking for any excuse to blind the people, as long as Spain has overseas territories they have no compliant again the British,/ Gibraltar is of no use to Spain, and to retaliate will hurt her as well.
