Brazil beef exports reached 5.37bn dollars in 2011, but volume was down 10.8%

Last year was very positive for Brazil beef exports having jumped from 4.8 billion dollars in 2010 to 5.37 billion in 2011, which represents an 11.65% increase according to Abicec, the Brazilian Association of Meat exporting industries.

However the most important boost came from international prices which on average increased 25.71% in 2011 compared to the previous year.

The average price of a ton of beef soared from 3.913 dollars in 2010 to 4.898 dollars in 2011, while the total volume of exports actually was down 10.8% said Abicec.

Frozen and chilled beef was the main export item with 4.17 billion dollars which represented an increase of 7.98% over 2010, although the volume shipped overseas was down 13.76% totalling 819.000 tons. Processed beef was 10% of total volume which offal and other by products totalled 9% and 6%.
