Argentina already have a good 9mm pistol design with the Bersa range of 'Thunder' DA semiautomatics.
Sep 07th, 2016 - 01:18 pm - Link - Report abuse 0They are much cheaper than either the 92F range or the new (cheapened) FX4 and they are also recognized by many people to have very good reliability.
The USA already has a Beretta Factory manufacturing the 92F range for the US forces and offers civilian versions as well. They are not cheap for civilians but they are popular.
The big problem for Bersa in the US is they are seen as Argentine 'junk' and priced accordingly. This is a shame, I can say from practical experience the Bersa 90 Pro is as good a 9mm pistol as I have ever fired and I have fired all the major models,.
It's 17+1 capacity is among the most available and the design prevents your hand being damaged / cut by the slide on firing as happens with some other pistols, notably Glocks and their Chinese copies.
How does making a 92F pistol in Argentina make it any better than a Bersa? I just cannot imagine price conscious LatAms being fooled into thinking it's a genuine Beretta, especially as the price will be more.
Bersa may have trouble erasing the zinc alloy frames that they produced from memory.
Sep 07th, 2016 - 05:32 pm - Link - Report abuse 0The present range of Thunder 9mm SA pistols do use an alloy frame but it certainly does not appear to be zinc based.
Sep 07th, 2016 - 07:50 pm - Link - Report abuse 0In my own experience with zinc alloy die-casting of gear and cam parts for office machinery use I cannot imagine such alloys being strong enough to withstand +P ammunition nor can I imagine it being weaker than a polymer frame firearm.
The current Pro 9mm has the serial number stamped firmly in the front of the frame LHS and would have suffered cracks or breakage if it had been zinc.
Perhaps the guns you have experience of are no longer manufactured, my experience is of the last two years. Other than that I cannot say.
Bersa do manufacture a range of steel 1911 SA in 9mm and 0.45acp. The 9mm is a little heavy and only has limited magazine capacity compared with the Pro Series guns.
