Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro received the best approval rating of his term on Friday, boosted by his popularity among recipients of COVID-19 stimulus payments despite the carnage the pandemic has caused in Brazil.

The far-right leader's approval rating surged five points from June, to 37%, while his disapproval rating plunged 10 points to 34%, the leading polling firm Datafolha reported.

It was the first time since April 2019, four months into his presidency, that Bolsonaro's approval rating outstripped his disapproval rating in the Datafolha poll.

The strong numbers came despite the fact that the new coronavirus has killed more than 105,000 people in Brazil -- the second-highest death toll worldwide, after the United States -- and

fueled the loss of 8.9 million jobs last quarter.

Known as the “Tropical Trump”, Bolsonaro is a divisive figure, condemned as racist, sexist, homophobic and dictatorial by his critics, but adored as a “Messiah” - his middle name - by his base.

His presidency has been marked by a constant string of controversies, most recently his handling of the pandemic. Even after catching the virus himself last month, putting him in quarantine for three weeks, Bolsonaro, 65, continues to downplay COVID-19.

He regularly rails against economically painful lockdown measures. Instead, he trumpets the unproven drug hydroxychloroquine as a treatment.

Other recent polls have also found Bolsonaro has rebounding popularity and a strong chance at re-election in 2022.

Datafolha found he was performing well among poor Brazilians who have been receiving monthly stimulus payments of 600 reais (some US$110) to offset the economic pain of the pandemic.

The former army captain had an approval rating of 42% among stimulus payment recipients.

In Brazil's poorest region, the northeast, typically a bastion for the left-wing opposition, his disapproval rating fell 17 points from June, to 35%. His approval rating there rose six points, to 33%. Datafolha carried out the poll on Aug 11 and Aug 12 via phone interviews with 2,065 respondents.

Getting close to sunset here on what has been a fabulous day! We have a tray with olives, goat cheese, freshly baked garlic bread-sticks and a recently opened '06 Santa Rita Casa Real Merlot which is mellow, but richly full-bodied. (Robert Parker would rate it easily over 90 points)

Your clear honesty exposing all the despicable things Terence Hill has publicly admitted on Mercopress — which has upset the sexually demented Marxist and you can see his nervous mental breakdown. (We may have to handle him with kid gloves, because he's a complete mental basket case.)

Things that Terry Fuckwitt has admitted and documented here on Mercopress:

    — He has repeatedly idolized and praised both Marxism and Communism.
    — He claims to have served in the RAF as a senior radio expert during the Cuba Missile Crisis. (He's numerously posted a picture of a beer tankard as proof.)
    — He cannot even pretend to decipher a simple phrase in Morse code.
    — He has openly boasted about his strange sexual relationship with Long Dong Silver.
    — He has shown a desire to be “intimate” with Lula da Silva.
    — He claims from personal experience, that there are no modern toilets in Brazil.
    — He lives in the lower lever of his mother's home in Canada.
    — He has repeatedly expressed a strange admiration of WWII war criminal generals.
    — He rigorously defends the evil government of the Marxist Nicolas Maduro.
    — He thinks very lowly of people living in the countryside.
    — He is incapable of self-composing a single coherent paragraph.
    — He has absolutely no appreciation of fine cuisine of any kind.

(These are only a few of my personal observations, but there are many more. I would note that I'm generously using the pronoun “HE” as an assumption.)

Other public assumptions would push him off the proverbial cliff, but you can clearly assume that he's mentally challenged and incapable of expressing civility...

    ¡Saludos de Panquehue!

Finally, I've returned to Chicureo after quite a long absence. The Carabineros were very polite, but the ridiculous health inspector at the toll station was starting to become pretentious until I pulled out all my documents showing I had a valid permission. This stupid pandemic lockdown is infuriating and highly overall detrimental.

Madame has two of our oldest grandchildren here for the weekend and their both glued to their smartphones. We're taking them hiking tomorrow in the hills.

(Jack FYI: I forwarded your earlier post to another Brazil thread, because it is far better than I would have written.)

    ¡Saludos!

The foreign press despise him, the socialists and globalists want him gone, but I'm convinced that Bolsonaro will barely win again.

There seems to be no viable option for moderates to choose.
