Uruguay's Ambassador to Guatemala Boris Svetogorsky passed away Friday in the Central American country at the age of 60, it was reported. The cause of death was not disclosed. He was also the concurrent Ambassador for Honduras and Belize.

The diplomat's death was announced by the Guatemalan Foreign Ministry, which also expressed its condolences. The Guatemalan administration of President Alejandro Giammattei also sent its “most sincere expressions of solidarity” to Uruguay after the death of the ambassador.

Svetogorsky had been on the post since May 16, 2019. Last month, both countries celebrated 115 years of bilateral relationships.

Boris Eduardo Svotogorsky Marino was born in Montevideo on March 22, 1962. He had joined Uruguay's diplomatic service in 1986.

The European Union's delegation in Guatemala and the Guatemalan Chamber of Industry also expressed their sorrow for the death of Svetogorsky Marino.
