The President of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, was invited by the government of the United Kingdom to meet with the Prime Minister of that country, Boris Johnson. He will travel to that country at the end of May or the beginning of June, as reported by Montevideo Portal and later confirmed by sources from the president's office.

Along these lines, the Uruguayan Foreign Ministry, together with the British government, is adjusting possible dates and the topics to be discussed by both parts.

The British Prime Minister had a meeting on Tuesday with another South American president. He held talks with the president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, in which they agreed to deepen relations between their countries on trade, defense and climate action, according to a Downing Street spokesman and consigned by EFE.

The last time Lacalle left the country was to attend the inauguration of Gabriel Boric as President of Chile in March, where he met with leaders from all over the region. On that occasion, Lacalle Pou took the opportunity of the visit for a dinner with the outgoing president, Sebastián Piñera.

After the Brexit, the United Kingdom reached trade agreements with the European Union, Japan and Australia, and also with some European countries that are not part of the EU, such as Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.

Earlier this week, Lacalle Pou described a racist gesture by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu against Armenian demonstrators in Montevideo as “regrettable,” while Ankara's Ambassador in Uruguay has been summoned to account for the events.
