  Avian flu has caused the death of some 3,000 Humboldt penguins in Chilean coasts

  

  Some 3,000 Humboldt penguins have died as a consequence of the avian influenza so far in 2023, according to official reports from the Chilean Fisheries National Service, Sernapesca. The data covers the period from February to October 6th and includes the flu death of 21.819 animals, of which 2,917 Humboldt penguins.

  Members of Chilean delegation in China test positive for Covid-19

  

  Various members of the Chilean delegation touring China ahead of the III Forum of the Belt and Road International Cooperation have tested positive for Covid-19 although President Gabriel Boric Font's results came back negative. All those infected will begin a 5-day isolation as per Chilean sanitary protocols, it was reported.

  Chile's first intercity bus powered by green hydrogen was launched Wednesday. According to those behind the initiative, these units generate water and heat as their only waste, thus eliminating polluting emissions en route to reducing the carbon footprint, the state agency Corporación de Fomento de la Producción (Corfo) and the company Foton, said.

  Chile extends state of emergency in violence-torn south

  

  Chile's Senate Tuesday passed a bill to extend the current state of emergency in La Araucanía and part of Biobío in force since mid-May 2022 to allow the armed forces to participate in the fight against violent groups operating in the area due to the so-called “Mapuche conflict” involving indigenous communities, logging companies and law enforcement authorities.

  Mapuche rebels arrested in southern Chile

  

  Chilean authorities in the Biobío region announced Thursday the arrest of at least 11 leaders of the Mapuche Lafkenche Resistance (RML), a radical group behind numerous attacks in the south of the country as a result of the territorial dispute between the state, indigenous groups and forestry companies that exploit lands considered ancestral by the indigenous people.
