President Lagos Travels to New York.

Chilean President Ricardo Lagos will travel this coming weekend to New York to participate in the ”hunger summit'' and the General Assembly of the United Nations.

During the meeting leaders and delegates will from all over the world will analyse a plan of action against poverty, compiled by a specialist team, a report which, according to sources of the Chilean president, is one of the best documents on the matter, ever presented at the United Nations.

As well as ways for fighting poverty those present at the meeting will discuss hunger in the world and ways to promote sustainable growth and ways to collect taxes through arms trading and financial transactions as well as ways to implement voluntary financing the help developing countries.

According to UN calculations, resources available to fight poverty are U$23,000 million and U$50,000 million is required. To reduce poverty by half by the year 2015 as the Millennium Declaration foresaw.

Lagos, Chirac and Lula will also participate in a meting called "for a fair globalisation creating opportunities for everyone" sponsored by Finland and Thailand with the coordination of the International Labour Organization.

Next Tuesday Lagos will participate in the General Assembly at the United Nations and make a speech about the defence of multilateralism, which will be centered on the United Nations mission to reconstruct and re-establish Haiti, in which military personnel and civilians from all over Latin America will participate.

During his stay in New York Lagos will also hold bilateral meetings with Rodriquez Zapatero and the prime ministers of Canada Paul Martoin and Portugal Jose Miquel Durao Borroso, the president's office informed.

The Chilean president will be accompanied by Foreign Minister Soledad Alvear and will return to Santiago on Wednesday.
