The Convent has issued a press statement confirming recent press reports about the forthcoming meeting between Jack Straw and Miguel Angel Moratinos.

It said "We are sorry that Gibraltarians should have first learnt of the date of this meeting from Spanish sources. The meeting will be a routine bilateral between the two Foreign Ministers, and will take place in Madrid on 27 October. A wide range of bilateral and international issues will be discussed. It is expected that issues relating to Gibraltar will be among them."

The date of the meeting was disclosed by the British ambassador to Spain, Stephen Wright pictured above, during a visit to Cadiz.

Earlier in the week the Voice of Gibraltar Group (VOGG) said that they hoped no-one will have to depend on the Spanish media for information on issues of paramount importance affecting The Rock.

Stephen Wright took up his post as British Ambassador to Madrid in May 2003. As Ambassador, he is responsible to the British Government for all aspects of the United Kingdom's relations with Spain. He is also accredited as Ambassador to the Principality of Andorra.

Prior to his appointment he spent five years at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London. Until October 2002 he was Director-General for Defence and Intelligence Affairs, responsible for the foreign policy aspects of all issues affecting the security and defence.
