Magallanes has six of Chile's least populated locations

Magallanes Region in the extreme south of Chile has some of the least populated towns and villages of the country according to the latest census.

A report from Chile's National Statistics Institute, INE, points out that the three most populated counties of the country concentrate 10% of total population and the three belong to Santiago's metropolitan area. They are: Maipu: 734.494; Puente Alto, 670.238 and La Florida with 397.456. At the other extreme are the towns with the least population, of which six belong to Magallanes region. The inverse list begins with Antarctica, where Chile has several bases and stations with a winter population totalling 97. Chilean Antarctica figures belonging to Magallanes Region which also includes Tierra del Fuego. The other locations are Rio Verde with 364 persons; Laguna Blanca, 639; Primavera, 681; Timaukel, 687 and San Gregorio, 842. Punta Arenas the capital of Magallanes Region is the most populated location of the area with 124.277 people according to INE, of which 63.130 are men and 61.147 women.
