May 1st through September 15th is duck season in Uruguay.
With the Portela Brothers, owners and managers of Black River Outfitters, duck hunters from all over the world have an excellent opportunity to game at one of the finest duck breeding destinations imaginable.

Why are we so convinced? For several reasons, beginning with geography, we are talking of one of the best and most appropriate locations for this kind of game in the lowlands of southeast Uruguay.

The area is readily accessible through Route 9, which runs parallel to the Atlantic coast linking Montevideo with the Brazilian border and connects with a chain of mostly unexploited resorts by the sea or the lagoons which speck the landscape.

Our “Pato Diablo” lodge is located in Punta del Diablo, province of Rocha (Devil’s Point, from where our product brand takes the name). It’s a small rocky peninsula used by fishermen only 14 miles away from the Uruguayan – Brazilian border, next to the marshy soil characteristic of the region.

These lowlands extend for miles and are the habitat for thousands of ducks and other wildlife. It is also the heartland of Uruguay’s rice industry so the area has abundant rice fields, ponds, paddies, irrigation canals and even rice stubble, which help keep the ducks strong and healthy, and obviously make it superb spots for hunting.

And just in case: in Uruguay baiting is not banned …nor is it needed.

Hunters can expect to find a great variety of options, such as white faced tree ducks, several types of teal which are pretty common, pin tails, corn ducks, the big rosy bills, with the bonus that it is a “low-pressure environment” area, since locals prefer other game hunting.

And yes, you are right: decoys are relatively new in the country: you should see the ducks come into the decoys and set their wings!

Uruguay is a natural duck hunting destination which will not let you down: especially if you book for the Black River Outfitters “Pato Diablo” combo that includes our lodge and very professional and personalized attention.

Any of our ten comfortable private rooms, spacious, air conditioned and, if you prefer, with a cozy living room with a big fireplace, looking out to the duck lagoons is waiting for you and your party.

So, make up your mind and give yourself a chance to get some “Devil Duck” in Uruguay. You will really enjoy it!
