In a ranking of the busiest port terminals in Latin America & Caribbean, elaborated in a work of Infrastructure Services Unit of ECLAC, Port of Rio Grande (RS) lost position for the Port of Montevideo, Uruguay. So they were, respectively, the 21st and 19th positions from the list.

The Uruguayan port grew by 14.2% in the movements in 2010 compared to the previous year, taking up 671,952 TEUs (unit of measurement equal to a 20-foot container), while Rio Grande handled 647,188 TEUs, representing an increase only 2.8% in 2010.

The Port of Santos, which had hitherto occupied the first place, was overcome by two terminals of Panama: Colon, which reached the first place, with 2,810,576 TEUs, and Balboa, in the second, moved Thy 2,758,506. Santos was responsible for the survey of 2,715,568 TEUs.

Buenos Aires is ranked in fifth position having handled 1.730.831 containers, a 22.5% increase over 2009.

ECLAC is the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean.
