Algeciras mayor highlights 'English occupation' of Gibraltar and the Falklands
The mayor of the Spanish town of Algeciras, Jose Ignacio Landaluce flew back this weekend from Argentina, where he had attended a twinning ceremony with Rio Grande, Tierra del Fuego that sought to highlight the ‘English occupation’ of Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands. Read full article

They are on the wrong side of history. The existence of these two nations is now permanent and neither Spain nor Argentina has ever given a single reason for them to join their neighbours. Nor trust them.
The UK will one day lose sovereignty over these two BOTs. However the result won't make Spain or Argentina any happier (or bigger).
Spain is trapped in the EURO & many in its government want out but they are in a financial prison, powerless to do anything while they watch their country deteriorate. What better way to get out than destroy the foundations of the EU & further undermine the membership of Britain, one of the few non Euro members who's already on verge of leaving & who's departure would cause the collapse of the EU freeing Spain.

Having lived in Spain for many years and in receipt of a Spanish state pension I can testify to the fact that the British are generally very well received there.

Paul, 'most prolific tourists' would be a better description. The young British Chavs are pretty awful, and they mainly go to Spain, Cyprus and Ibiza. We are ashamed of them, but the other 98% are well behaved and good tippers. Remember that as you wait at their table.

Unfortunately some people think that to crictise the alleged faults of the UK somehow justifies the the failings of other countries.
An arguement I do not employ.
I am extremely critical of the countries in SA that I have experience of, (meaning I have house/business/family there), or have studied at University in UK or or those countries (post-grad), or do business with currently!
I am critical with both experience and justification - see above.
I have family who inform me, and I travel/work there regulary, unlike some.
However, I genuinely want the best for LA, I just despair of CERTAIN regimes. The Pacific Alliance looks promising though.

You're right we do have wonderful beaches - from the unspoilt Orkneys to the sandy beaches of Devon and Cornwall and even the pebbly beaches of Sussex. Weather can be a bit up and down. It's true, we do have great food - a large number of Michelin stared restaurants (157 - how many does Argentina have by the way?) and possibly the most diverse cuisine in the world. You're right, we have some beautiful scenery, from Cornwall and Devon, the South Downs, through the Lake District to the highlands. Of course, what we really excel in is culture - for example, we have 3 of the top 5 visited museums in the entire world - and they're ALL FREE.
As already pointed out the UK receives almost 6 times as many tourists as Argentina. You really are not very clever are you? I'm still intrigued where your rambling anti-British vitriol comes from.
P.S. “beautiful women” - Assuming you're being sarcastic... this comment just demonstrates how much of a child you are, the UK is a state, NOT a fucking brothel for sex tourists.

I called out a yellow chopper to pick a lad out of the sea and I believe Prince William was flying it-obviously an unarmed yellow Sea King is an Argentine's worst nightmare, but don't worry amigos-Prince William is no longer based nearby, so if Sea Kings minus the Prince don't worry you-try Shell Island or any other beach you fancy.

Favourable currency exchange and less distance than most Argentines need to travel - by “overnight bus” or whatever.

For example, the theatres, opera and ballet performances which are packed out night after night. Or may be the restaurant scene, which in spite of the reputation of English food, is now a subject of much envy, even from the French.
Tourists are generally welcome here and even the most naive of them is treated with respect - we don't often hear about visitors to Britain being murdered as has happened recently in Argentina.

Troy@55, the fact that 90% of the Chinese who apply for visas to the Argentine are turned down, is Argentina's loss.... billions of USD they don't get in tourist revenues...and even if the Chinese DO go with the intention of staying on illegally, so what ?? at least they stay on to work and to make money, not sponge off the taxpayers. Here in Sao Paulo, you see more n more chinese every day, perhaps many illegal, but none of them are begging in streets or getting involved in petty crime.

However, all the indications are that they are going to whip themselves up into another frenzy and do something very very stupid again.
It is clear though from their very own judiciary that they stand absolutely no chance of taking the islands on any legal footing.

Obviously, it is very short-sighted of the Arg. government to deny them entrance. From what I read, the Chinese in Argentina are entrepreneurs and run many small businesses - probably not qualifying for any Government programs, as they are fully employed and deemed to be able to afford to pay taxes.
Any new “illegals” would not be a drain on the government welfare system.
I wonder if the Arg government simply does not recognise the income potential from Chinese tourism and investment, or is it being racist and/ or protectionist ??
I am interested to see if Pab lo Casey wishes to embrace this relationship, or labels the Chinese as a “threat”.

i do not agree in denying the tourist visa to anyone regarding only in their nationality.
now it is true that some kind of mafia related with the chinese brought thousands of their connationals as “tourists”, when in reality they were illegal immigrants.

What on earth do the ILLEGAL immigrants have to do with war criminals, the latter, once they are discovered, are charged with their crimes and then either imprisoned or deported.
War crimes have nothing to do with those illegal immigrants who arrive in the UK usually with the sole purpose of taking advantage of our very generous social security arrangements. Most of them don't even know where they are sometimes and “lose” their passports and other documentation to avoid being returned to their country of origin.
You clearly don't know half of it and constantly quoting the Independent and the Guardian newspapers hardly helps your cause.

Two days ago, on CBC News, our respected national news radio, there was a report about the Columbian Border Patrol intercepting Venezuelan black marketeers smuggling a truck load of meat across, to sell at huge profit in Columbia.
With Maduro's price controls on food, the black market is thriving. Suppliers are unable to cover their costs of production, selling legally.
A result is a thriving black market with vast amounts of good crossing the border - while Venezuelan people face empty shelves.
Stevie and his ilk are loving this!
