“Calamitous” state of Argentine Armed Forces equipment

Tuesday, July 22nd 2014 - 08:02 UTC
Full article 129 comments

Argentine investigative reporter Jorge Lanata, loathed by the current government of president Cristina Fernandez for his disclosure of the close business links of certain unscrupulous entrepreneurs (or most probably straw-men) who have become millionaires during the Kirchner years, has now exposed the 'calamitous' state of the Argentine armed forces equipment. Everything in this story is TRUE.

Since the middle 90s they have being reporting the loss of assets, skills and talent in our armed forces. Years of neglecting our defense. Years of left-oriented brainwashing crap against the military. Well, here´s the result: a defenseless country. Yet they spend endless hours and tons of hot air denouncing the British imperialism, the militarization of the south Atlantic, etc.

This is not, however, of the entire fault of the last govs, much specially the last decade of kirchner´s BS. The first responsible are the military itself, after years of corruption, cups and the worst Argentinian mistake of the XX century: the falklands war. They planted the seeds of the current status.

And here it is what we have now: no air control, no sea control, no land forces suitable for modern warfare. Our borders have being neglected and given away to smugglers, illegals and drug dealers (the same who pay for certain candidates, such as CFK). Illegal fisheries destroy our seas, yet we focus on the “evil islands” as if they were the roots of all our troubles.

What a shame. What a disgrace.

I said and, under risk of being called names, I repeat myself: the only possible solution for Argentina is to be annexed by a long running country, period. We will simply NOT survive another 4 years of that cancer caller “peronism”, nor another “bolivarian” gov.

I assume this was by design as any south American military would have forced a coup by now based on the shambles the Kirchners have made of things.

the armed forces are totally useless for a country like argentina, who has not any possibility of bellicose conflict.
so the armed forces should be restructured to do civil work, expelling and jailing milani, restructuring their expenses and putting them in service of more noble causes.
that is why is very important to demilitarize the south atlantic, especially those little islets located in the southern mar argentino.

in the end, we, like the rest of south america, are not a bellicose nation like little britain who are invading and looting other territories since its creation.

#8 Paul, I take it that your comment about the British Military is ironic? We all know that the only reason the garrison is there is because it needs to be there to protect the inhabitants and British territory. I am sorry your country is a basket case, but thats the fault of the inhabitants. Your neighbours are a shining example of how to set things right. A strong military scares the Peronists who fear what happened in the 70s and 80s.

I've long thought Chile should take the productive farming land and probably the oil/gas fields too.
There's nothing Argentina could do about it
And its really better off in their hands
If they were going to do it now is the time while the USA has a weak and indecisive Prez that lets other countries take whatever they want.

I am sorry mate. But even if we Chileans might be in a military position to annex you guys... currently with ease, this would turn out as a troyan horse. Due to mayority of your population (45 millions vs our 17 million), you would reelect the same people of your government into ours towards Santiago, and you would f*ck up my chilean nation and drag us down too.

I am sorry, this issue must be solved by you guys yourselves, we do not have any territorial ambitions of megalomania and grandesse, but only interested in the development of our little and fine nation. Good luck

I´m afraid you may be right. This has to be solved from within. However, I don´t see any chances in the following years, since those who may replace CFK play the same music, and people ... well, people either don´t care or are quite comfortable living out of those who actually work.

The green heartlands are too far away from Chile, they have to cross the Andes and the desert of Mendoza and San Luis to get there. They would need at least +50.000 troops to occupy that much land. That unless they would be more interested in Patagonia and the energy resources there. That is much more in their range

After watching those Stratfor reports and brilliant lectures from Zeihan for me it’s obvious that Brazil is landlocked and will never become a power unless it takes control over the Parana basin and the heads of navigation that Argentina moved North in the 1830s.

My guess is that the Argentine Defense minister is not even aware of those kind threats or not even qualified to understand those kind of strategical concepts that is simply available to anybody on the internet.
They are too ideologically stupid and unrealistic, they are all about the Malvinas they think Britain is going to steal chunks of Ice in the Antarctic on or the yanks are going invade the water reservoirs and make a underground pipeline all the way to California but all the Latam brothers are going to come to our rescue.

the difference is there isn't any conflict hypothesis here.
so far this government has used the armed forces as an excuse for corruption.
all that in accordance with milani.
so a small self defence force would be more than enough for a country like this, and the possibility to control its expenses would be a lot more feasible.

Just because they have renounced war doen't mean they don't have a defensive force to deter aggressors, just like there are forces on the Falklands to prevent Argentina walking in (which your defense minister said they would)

“the borders are patrolled / defended by the gendarmería and prefectura, not by the armed forces.”
They would police your borders, if an agressive army turned up your army would be there to meet them.

I can't help but admire Paul's delusion that JSDF (which includes 16 attack submarines, 4 helicopter destroyers (light carriers to my way of thinking), 37 major surface combatants, 300+ fighter aircraft (not including those being phased out), 650+ main battle tanks, 200+ self-propelled artillery pieces, about 100 attack helicopters and a total of a quarter of a million active personnel is somehow the equivalent of a coastguard/border control/police force.

Argentina is lucky in that none of its neighbours have ever shown interest in geographic expansion. It is good for the region that Argentina is practically unilaterally disarming. As Argentina becomes defenceless we too can reduce our forces.

Although not by design, it is right that this process started in Argentina. No neighbour of Argentina (as historically an aggressor and expansionist nation) could ever take the step to disarm if Argentina had a strong military.

If Argentina had the military capability to take on all her neighbours simultaneously (as Chile does) how safe would the region be?

Argentina has a serious problem with controlling her borders, something the military could help with, but really is the responsibility of a civil police force. Besides that the issue seems to be of corruption and lack of prestige.

    @51 Tobias

I find it amusing that you are writing in 'pidgin English' in your pretend Chinese persona. In other words you are writing how you believe (in your own little racist view) a Chinese person would speak.

What you don't know (because you are ignorant and racist) is that most Chinese English speakers have VERY good English, both written and spoken. It's important to them to learn English because it opens up career opportunities and they can get very well paid jobs.

I know that you've learn all you can of the Chinese by watching old Charlie Chan movies, but honestly Chinese people don't speak like that.

Also your complete 'defence' of Argentina is hilarious. Trying to fool others into believing that the 'world' supports Argentina. We've had your French (EUian) fake persona, your African fake persona and now your Chinese extremely fake persona.

And all because you can't, just can't, criticise the government about anything. And the reason you can't do that is because you don't understand that in a democracy it is not only the right of the people to question and criticise the government, it is the DUTY of the people to do so. But you believe (no doubt through your indoctrination) that to criticise the government is treason. Well that's only true in dictatorships.

Grow up Tobias. Pick a handle and stick with it. People will have far more respect for you. Using sock puppets is dishonest and proves that you know you haven't got any arguments that hold any water.

So be a man, Tobias, criticise the government for running down your armed forces to a point where they couldn't repel an attack from a group of girl guides, let alone an invading force.

Lucky for you that the British aren't interested in Argentina, isn't it? Despite what your insane leader and her winged monkeys would have you believe.

Chilean army never defeated. Defeat Bolivia & Peru two times in glorious defensive wars to end enemy's expansion. Defeat Cuban and Russian subversives in 20th century.

Argentine expansion to Bolivia defeated. Argentina shamed failed expansionist past. Kill native population in Patagonia. Defeated by Bolivia. Defeated by second rate English pirates. Now defeated by little woman of botox face.

I think you should consider Toby Chan as a good name for you. It is sufficiently westernised to be easily adopted by Anglophones and is true to the roots of both your Argentine and Chinese personas.

I hope this persona lasts, he is both amusing and his English is far more concise than overly wordy Toby incarnations.

Oh dear, no ammo, no modern weaponry, very few things they call ‘planes that the UK call ‘targets’ and best of all the army haven’t really got over being a bunch of cowards: unless they are bullying Uruguay.

TMBOA has done this to prevent all the Peronistas from being executed by their own armed forces, so The Dark Country will always be Peronist and screwed internationally, except for their ‘friends’, the Chin.

With friends like the Chin you don’t need any more enemies, although you have them: the whole world hates The Dark Country!

One can only speculate why, if this article reflects the true state of the Argentinian forces, the UK finds it necessary to maintain a military base in the South Atlantic. But the state of the Argentinian forces or the existence of the UK base is not relevant to the UK's impending return of the Malvinas.

Apart from they are called the FALKLAND ISLANDS. almost right

The reason is simple, the head of the Argy military has clearly stated the only thing stopping Argyland re-invading the Falklands is the overwhelming military presence.

Sure someone has the precise quote.

    Simple really.

We got caught in '82 not prepared, we will not be caught again.

99.8% of the 92% or so who voted want the Falklands to remain a British Territory.
    It's called democracy.
And this vote wasn't with polling stations surrounded by armed foreigners like in the Crimea.

The forces currently in the Falklands are there protecting the rights of the Peoples of the Falklands to have a Voice, I'm sure we all Think that is a worthy cause.

Argentina’s minister of Defence called on the UK “to sit and dialogue” over the Falklands/Malvinas sovereignty and warned that the British military presence in the South Atlantic “is the only element that upholds the usurpation of that part of our national territory”.

This about the 4th time I have had to remind the thickos WHY the UK
