I think the US will save plenty of money to help with its debt when it doesn't need to fund presidential visits overseas. LOL

There is one thing that the British need to understand: Who is to be the US president is entirely the concern of Americans and that comments from the British in this regard are not welcome. The British need to remember that the UK is a freeloading American vassal nation.

Irrespective of whomever is elected in November the British are in for a nasty shock. If Trump is elected then that shock is to occur very soon. If, as I expect, Clinton is elected them the shock will be delayed but it will still be coming. People are over supporting freeloaders like you - and the KSA and others.

So long as your country has military bases in my country I will maintain a keen interest in whomever your country chooses to elect President. Given the not insignificant possibility that your future leader maybe an intemperate fool with delusions of grandeur I consider that interest part of my civic duty.

Stop pretending to be an American. The syntax and grammar in your posts give you away. Also, I doubt that most Americans even know where the Falklands are and many could not even place the UK on a world map.
It is just your own bitter and twisted opinions that you keep pushing.
Maybe you should seek some counselling for anger management.
When can we expect your 25 years crap. I presume that this is on a pre-programmed app. triggered to go off at intervals when you cannot think of anything to say.
Anyway, keep up the good work. It brightens up my dreary day and gives me a self-satisfied glow to think that there is someone in a worse state than me.

Who is the future Leader of the Free World is the concern of us all. But besides that, we are entitled to an opinion. Trump is a pathological liar and has cheated his way to a fortune. (Not as big a fortune as he likes to boast but he can't help but lie about it). He inherited most of his money from his slum-landlord father but tends to gloss over that fact. He was born into a rich family. That is no crime but he likes to make out he made his money from scratch and he didn't.

That he has tapped into the uneducated (he loves the uneducated) Americans who are dissatisfied and want to find someone to blame is the real concern. That Americans would be so stupid as to fall for a populist and conman is profoundly worrying. That Trump is revengeful and has a huge but paper-thin ego is a worry to everyone.

I am not sure why the Argentineans here are excited about it - he hates you foreigners too. And don't worry about the 'special relationship' with the U.K. It only refers to information and intelligence sharing. That is all it has ever been and will continue to be.

@9 All cities have bad areas and I am sorry you were only able to afford to visit those areas. I am trying to think of when one of our footballers was shot dead on their doorstep protecting their child. Nope. That was Buenos Aires. Do you see how silly you look?

The pm's and mayor's actions are predictable and justifiable considering the populations of London and the UK and the corresponding influence of the muslim world on them.

The UK's future dependence on the muslim world for a variety of its needs is alas unavoidable at this juncture.

How many “lowland”Scots do you Know . How many Hebridean Scots, How many Border Scots. How many Outer Isle Scots, How many “Fifers”. Of course people everywhere have an opinion on the US election, it affects all of us when America is the most powerful country in the world.

I think the rest of the world should get a small share of the vote on the US president, but only if they accept observers from the US to make sure the elections are free and fair.

    “Do ex-pats get a vote?”

The rules are very sample: all ex-pats get the vote up to 15 years of continuous residency abroad, after that NO.

You have, like us, to register with the Embassy in order to receive the papers on time.

Some people still in the UK seem to think no ex-pats should vote but we have all our pensions vested in the UK and I still have an interest in two properties.

And of course I still pay tax in the UK.

Perhaps you saw the legal action by a group who have lived on the continent for well over 15 years and are concerned that if a Brexit happens they may be chucked out. Frankly I just cannot see that happening, why should any country lose income, even if it comes from ex-pats?

    I hope this helps.

You live in the Highlands? About 4 miles N. of the fault line.
Dunoon has more in common with the industrial belt than the Highlands.
“Aligned southwest to northeast from Lochranza on Arran, the Highland Boundary Fault bisects Bute and crosses the southeastern parts of the Cowal and Rosneath Peninsulas, as it passes up the Firth of Clyde. It comes ashore near Helensburgh, then continues through Loch Lomond.”

I take it you have actually climbed Torres del Paine. Well, you have my admiration if you did.

I didn't find the Cuillins “fun”. It scared the crap out of me.

In 1963 I joined my work colleague for a week end climbing in the Cuillins. He had done all the Munros by 1957, advised on the winter climbing routes in the Cuillins for the Scottish Mountaineering Club Guide. My other companion was a mountaineering guide for the Outward bound courses in Wester Ross and had climbed extensively in the Alps , Caucasus and Hindu Kush. He was also a good friend of Hamish MacInnes. I should have known better !

We set off from Sligachan to Sgur nan Gillean to traverse the Pinnacle Ridge - a good scramble with some rock climbing . What I was NOT told was that they were going to try some new pitches en route. It was a force 8 fog above 1000 feet and I followed in the middle of the rope. The serious stuff started when we -not me- tried a pitch with a steep overhang. The wind was trying to rip us off so that was abandoned and we had to do a traverse on an almost vertical cliff .
As the inexperienced man, I went second. It was tricky but manageable.
Suddenly the sun burned off the mist and below me was a vertical drop to death.
I clung on in a cold sweat with my hands like claws and legs shaking. I almost let myself go to get over the inevitable but made it round to my companion.
The next crux was the Bhasteir tooth. On going round this I managed to slip and dropped about a foot to be held by the rope. If that had not held me I would have bounced all the way down and ended up a jelly.
That cured me of any pretensions of being a mountain climber. After that it was hill walking. The Cuillins were not fun !

http://en.mercopress.com/2016/05/17/cameron-stands-by-his-criticism-of-trump-stupid-divisive-and-wrong#comment440995: I do remember the Viet Nam War. And my memories, unlike yours, are first person.

There was no way that the US wanted the UK in Viet Nam. There were two main reasons why not: British actions in Viet Nam had resulted in a very negative view of them in the country, and; The British were unable to provide any useful military force - they where, in the words of Dean Acheson “past it”.

The fact is that in the 20 years following the end of WWII the British attempted various obfuscations and end runs against and around the promises given in the Atlantic Charter and elsewhere. The US wanted to put the British back in their box - that is to withdraw to Europe and join what was then the European Common Market. So, in order to provide leverage the US made a request to the UK. This policy was successful. The British issued the 'East of Suez' (I.E. the withdrawal from) paper and joined the ECM.

If I am American? So, who's claiming that I am American. Certainly not I. Presumably you are making this claim for your own purposes.

There has been a program in the US - the name of which presently escapes me - which has been examining the ethnicity of various famous Americans. It turns out that the US population is some amalgam of German, Irish, African, Middle Eastern, Polish or Russian, Asian, Native American and Latino - with many others thrown in. I have only watched a few of these episodes but I found them very interesting. However, I find your request for information on my ethnicity creepy. But then you British are a very creepy people so I should not be surprised. If I am, as you propose, American then my answer is, as above, German, Irish, ... I can tell you that I am originally from a plain city on the banks of a plain river in a plain county. I am a plain person and that is all you need to know.

It seems that I was wrong. The UK DID have a part in the Vietnam war
See these web sites. So your first paragraph is baloney.
“in the words of Dean Acheson “past it”. It seems that Kennedy disagreed .
    .nam.ac.uk/whats-on/lunchtime-lectures/video-archive/jungle-too-far-britain-vietnam-war
    .historytoday.com/marc-tiley/britain-vietnam-and-special-relationship

”So, who's claiming that I am American.“
YOU ARE. In previous posts you have as good as stated that.
You find a request for your ethnicity creepy. You find the British ”creepy”
I think it is fair to say that the bulk of the people on this forum find YOU creepy in the extreme.
You do realise that your ethnicity does matter when giving opinions-not facts.
If you were Argentinian and purporting to speak for the USA then I would dismiss this as biased. If you were a citizen of the USA then I would give more credence to your opinions -but not that you spoke for the whole of the USA.
Similarly, I agree with some British posters and disagree with others.
I have stated that I am Scottish/British so you can judge any prejudices that I may exhibit. I cannot see any problem declaring your background.
Not to do so smacks of cowardice or wishing to hide your own prejudices and pretending that you are a world citizen only dealing with facts. RUBBISH !
It also speaks volumes about your attitude that you don't mention any ethnic input to the USA from Britain....willful omission or just plain creepy hatred.
You do realise that in 1770's it was people mainly from British stock that founded the USA. The Germans also had a large contribution. The Scots/Irish were the main instigators of the western pioneering movement. The Irish, Italians,Poles and east Europeans did not arrive in any force until about the 1840's to the turn of the century. The Afro Americans have a history much longer than these groups.

    Your scholarship is z-.
Out of curiosity, I did some research on ethnicity and discovered that 34 out of the 44 US Presidents had British/Irish surnames.
In the American Civil War ,on BOTH sides, the vast majority of the Senior Officers up to Generals had British /Irish surnames. Eg. Robert E Lee , Ulysses Simpson Grant, Jeb Stuart, McClellan, Sherman, Johnstone, Harrison, Scott and Stonewall Jackson..
Is it not strange that you could find NO trace of the British in your “research” into the ethnic background of the USA. Have you never heard of “New England”
or Virginia. How did they acquire their names ? By a lucky dip ?
If this is an example of American scholarship, God help AMERICA..but again, you now deny being American....or do you ?

This includes Obama, through his mother.
    Distantly, but still related.
Also read that George Washington's ancestors were called de Wallsingham & came originally from Northamptonshire.
The article showed the family shield & it was a line of white stars on a blue band across the top & vertical red & white stripes underneath.
ls there nothing new under the sun?
l suppose the article was correct, but haven't checked yet.

http://en.mercopress.com/2016/05/17/cameron-stands-by-his-criticism-of-trump-stupid-divisive-and-wrong#comment441226: As I said my memories of the Viet Nam War are first person. I was aware of the British playing around the edges at the time. But so where the French and others. Do you have a point?

In which posts do I claim to be an American or any other nationality?

How you assign credibility to posts or persona is a matter for you alone. It needs no input from me. However, if you use a persona's nationality as the basis of this assignment, then my advice to you is to, in my case, assign a nationality to me and rank my credibility accordingly.

The nationalities I mentioned are from my memories of a few episodes seen some time ago. I don't remember any mention of English ethnicity. I did mention Scottish and Irish ethnicity so I did in fact mention the British. But, looking back at the list, I see I've missed the Italians. I don't remember if they were mentioned in the episodes but Italian immigration to the US far exceeds that of the English. Fortunately the Italians are not so insecure that they require constant recognition of their existence by me in order to maintain their sense of self worth.

Getting back to Viet Nam there were two reasons why the US did not want to have the UK in that war. First was that it was the UK that brought the French back after WWII. This was a problem not only for the DRV but also the GVN. Incidentally I remember speaking to a man who was in the US Navy during WWII. He told me that there was a lot of disquiet in the US military while this was occurring. They didn't like the idea that so many Americans had died in order to allow the Europeans to recolonize.

The second reason was that the UK had no real capability to project power in the region. Had they been in Viet Nam they would have been a drain on the US logistics and transportation systems. And memories of WWII performance did not recommend UK troops to the US.

    Your quote at #92
“It turns out that the US population is some amalgam of German, Irish, African, Middle Eastern, Polish or Russian, Asian, Native American and Latino - ”

You say:- don't remember any mention of English ethnicity. I did mention Scottish and Irish ethnicity so I did in fact mention the British.
Where did you mention Scottish and by default British?
Making up porkie pies again ?

As to where did you say you were American. In discussing “American attitudes to the UK” you have used the first person pronoun -WE -several times. This means that you are claiming American citizenship.

I spoke to a service man. Good for you so it must be true if it fell in with your anti British stand.

So the USA fought both the Germans and Japanese to prevent the UK re establishing their colonies.
All the time I thought that they had declared war on the Japanese because of the attack on Pearl Harbour and the Philippines. I must have got that wrong !
I did not realise that they were being sacrificed to enable “European powers to re establish colonialism. I thought that in the Far East, it was to maintain US hegemony. However, I am not getting into a slagging match about US/British relations which is what you are hoping to achieve.
Are you perchance a Historian ? Your posts are full of nuanced expressions such as someone told me, the British were a burden in WW2 were ineffective and did not pull their weight etc, etc.
As a vindictive Troll you have nothing to say that commands any sort of respect.

    Pom Americans...: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Americans..
No such terminology...Poms refer to Australia.
” In the 1980 United States Census, over 49 million (49,598,035) Americans claimed English ancestry, at the time around 26.34% of the total population and largest reported group which, even today, would make them the largest ethnic group in the United States.[11][12]
