The EU's Brexit negotiator has said he sees the process as an opportunity to “teach the British people and others what leaving the EU means”. Michel Barnier said he would never resort to blackmail but saw it as his job to “educate” the UK about the price it would pay for leaving the EU “club”. Read full article

They do not sound like the words of a good faith negotiator. They sound like the words of a “take it or leave it but don't think you will be allowed to leave it” dictator. Call his bluff.

It would be interesting to know if his sentiments are backed by ALL the 27 countries in the EU.
Yes, the UK could be adversely affected but so could many of the EU States who have a lot of important trade with the UK that could not be replaced anywhere else.

“I don't want to punish them I just want to teach them a lesson” (more or less)

No surprise though as he was a disciple of the anglophobe De Gaulle.

They still haven't realised. The UK is leaving the EU. Make it as easy for all concerned.

“The EU suggested little substantive progress had been made on three key “separation” issues, the size of the UK's financial liabilities to the EU, the future of the Irish border and citizens' rights after Brexit.”

The UK should pay nothing; there must be customs and immigration inspections at the Irish border, or there is no way to control who, or what comes into the country -- whatever is done is no concern of the EU; EU citizens, when Britain is no longer a member, should have no more rights in the UK than any other foreigners. A competent government would reject all the EU's demands, and leave. There's no reason to discuss any of this, or concede anything (except that May wants to keep Britain as closely bound to the EU as she can).

The EU Commission lead by the Mayor of Trumpton want to punish us. Their negotiating team lead by a clown seem to be intent on trying to humiliate us. No wonder we want to leave this creaking institution. I can see this ending up with us just leaving.

Arrogant twat. Clearly has little respect for the democratic decision of the British people. But then why would that surprise anyone.
