Russia claims to have found huge oil reserves in Antarctica; UK feels it could mean a complete new ball game

The House of Commons’ Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) held a special session on Russian oil exploration in the polar region, following on claims that the Rosgeo oil exploration company had reported that its research vessel Alexander Karpinsky has completed a comprehensive subsurface geological survey, mapping very promising oil and gas prospects on the Antarctic oil shelves.

Paraguayan beef granted entry into Canadian market

Canada's Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) greenlighted the entry of Paraguayan meat into their market with nine packing plants already authorized to start shipments. Paraguayan President Santiago Peña celebrated the good news with postings on social media. “I congratulate all the institutions and sectors involved for this important achievement,” he wrote.

Falklands war: “The secret pact between Chile and the United Kingdom”, ex-head of Argentine Army

A former commander in chief of the Argentine Army, 2003 to 2011, and Malvinas Veteran, Martín Balza in a recent column in the Buenos Aires daily Perfil, wrote a column exposing what he described as 'a secret pact between Chile and UK', to help avoid the defeat of the British Task Force in 1982 during the Falkland Islands conflict with Argentina.

Milei and Lacalle Pou will meet eventually despite not sharing identical views, says Adorni

Argentina's Presidential Spokesman Manuel Adorni said in an interview with Montevideo's El País that Presidents Luis Lacalle Pou and Javier Milei had different points of view regarding the State's role in each country's economy. The official also addressed the delay in materializing an encounter between both heads of state despite the short geographical distance separating them.

Peru: New malignant tumor detected in Fujimori's tongue

Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori was found to have yet another malignant tongue tumor, it was reported in Lima during the weekend. The 85-year-old rightwing leader, who was released from jail on Dec. 7, 2023, has suffered from a cancerous lesion for more than 27 years and has undergone six surgeries in the same place.

Experienced diplomat in the region appointed UK ambassador to Uruguay

The British Government announced Mr. Malcolm Christopher David Green as the next Ambassador to Uruguay. Malcolm Green will arrive in Montevideo in August, replacing Ambassador Ms. Faye O'Connor OBE, who will take up a new post at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in London.

Wages trail inflation in Argentina under Milei

Inflation outpaced salaries in March by 11% to 10.3%, according to a report by Argentina's National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (Indec) released Friday in Buenos Aires. In yoy terms, the Wage Index increased by 200.8% on average (231.7% in the registered private sector, 183.7% in the public sector, and 129.2% in the informal private sector) and inflation was 287.9%, the survey showed. Hence, President Javier Milei's perception that salaries were recovering turned out inaccurate.

UN General Assembly okays Palestine's full membership but with no voting rights

Despite Argentina's thumbs down together with eight other countries, the United Nations (UN) decided on Friday by 143 votes in favor and 25 abstentions to upgrade Palestine's status within the organization to that of a full membership, it was reported in New York. In 2012, Palestine had been admitted as an Observer State with 138 votes in and also 9 against.

New incident between Argentine forces and illegal Paraguayan fishermen

The Governor of the Argentine province of Corrientes Gustavo Valdés insisted that the Foreign Ministry and the Senate should get involved after another clash was reported between unauthorized Paraguayan fishermen and the Coast Guard (Prefectura Naval Argentina - PNA). “I hope they take care and do not continue denying the conflict as they have been,” Valdés underlined.

Gen. Richardson warns of dangers of China's LatAm expansion

US Southern Command (Southcom) Chief General Laura Richardson warned during her appearance Thursday at the Ninth Hemispheric Security Conference (HSC) at the Florida International University (FIU) Miami campus, organized by the Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy together with the Taeda Foundation that China's growing influence in building critical infrastructure in Latin America had raised security concerns. In addition, the region hardly benefits “from the resources that China extracts,” the four-star general stressed.
