Record 2007/08 harvest in Brazil, 143.8 million tons
Brazil confirmed that the 2007/08 was the greatest grain and oilseed crop ever, 143.8 million tons. The Ministry of Agriculture said it was 9.2% above the previous season and could further increase when the final volumes of the northeast second corn harvest are completed.
JP Morgan: Uruguay exposed to Argentine slowdown
US investment bank JP Morgan said the expected deceleration in Argentina will have an impact for the performance of neighboring Uruguay's economy, according to reports published in the Montevideo press.
Protests in Bolivia cuts gas exports; US ambassador expelled
President Evo Morales said Wednesday that he is expelling the U.S. ambassador in Bolivia for allegedly inciting violent opposition protests. Morales' announcement came hours after a pipeline blast triggered by saboteurs forced the country to cut natural gas exports to Brazil by 10%.
Brazil raises basic rate to 13.75%, highest in two years
The Brazilian Monetary Policy Committee (Copom) of the Central Bank (BC) raised the base interest rate (Selic) by 0.75 percentage point, from 13% to 13.75% a year. This is the fourth consecutive hike in Selic and the highest is almost two years.

Petrobras confirms pre-salt oil reservoir of light oil and gas
Petrobras announced this week that the completion of the Iara well drilling (which first found oil in August 2007) confirmed the discovery of light oil in the Santos basin pre-salt reservoir with a recoverable volume estimated in 3 to 4 billion barrels of light oil and natural gas.
Nuclear power predicted to continue to expand strongly
The United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Thursday that nuclear power is expected to continue to expand in the coming decades in line with the growing global demand for energy, while also reporting that the power source's share of global electricity generation dropped another percentage point in 2007 to 14%.
