Five days paid “honeymoon leave” for Chilean newlyweds

A proposed new law will guarantee Chilean employees five paid working days as “honeymoon leave” and will not take away from the legal yearly vacation days workers are given.

Employees can take the five days before or after their wedding and need to inform their employers 30 days in advance.

Once married, the employee has thirty days to present the marriage certificate to the employer as proof.

Deputy Carolina Goic, president of the Chamber of Deputies’ Workers Commission, is lobbying for the new bill.

“Moving forward on this bill will not only improve our labour laws, but will also support families and couples who choose to solidify their relationship [through marriage],” Goic said.

Although some employers already give their employees time off as honeymoon days, it has not been a legal obligation until now.
