Defining the future relationship of Overseas Territories with the European Union (EU) was the purpose of the ninth annual Overseas Countries and Territories of the European Union Forum, held earlier this month in the Pacific state of New Caledonia and attended by Legislative Assembly Member Roger Edwards, Michael Poole of FIG and the Falklands UK representative Sukey Cameron.

The relationship between the EU and its OT is due to be formally renewed from January 1 2013, and 23 territories associated with UK, France, Netherlands and Denmark were there to formally agree a joint paper setting out their key objectives.

MLA Edwards said the key messages in this wide-ranging document were a request for a commitment from the EU to a future relationship based on the recognition of OT as valuable assets, but with unique economic, environmental and social challenges It highlighted the need for EU support in the areas of development financing, communications, technical support for exports (e.g. fish and meat) and political backing where possible.

The Falklands delegation also succeeded in having all the OT present sign a declaration asking the EU to ensure their rights as defined in the UN Charter on self-determination were not undermined.

In addition to the formal work of the forum, the opportunity was taken to discuss a number of topics with EU officials including the drawing down of the Falkland Islands outstanding balance (€4.13m) of European Development funding, environmental protection, renewable energy and disease prevention. Is this garbage supposed to intimidate Argentina?

    lol

    “OT” is dab14763's favorite acronym.

You wouldn't happen to work for Mercopress, would you dab14763?

You were just talking about this quite compulsively on “Falkland Islands’ tours are top three in South America” http://en.mercopress.com/2011/03/22/falkland-islands-tours-are-top-three-in-south-america

Look at post #40, he goes nuts about “OT”s

An OT signed in support of “self-determination”? Wow, what are the odds?

“held earlier this month” ...and you JUST found out.

Come on dab14763, tell me you don't work for Mercopress ;-)

    OT is a standard acronym.

    Paranoia can annoy ya,
    Schizophrenia gets in between ya,
    I blame it on society
