For the first time, Argentina has a Jewish president, at least temporarily. Beatriz Rojkes, the provisional president of the Argentine Senate, is in charge of the government for several days because both President Christina Fernandez and Vice-President Amado Boudou are overseas.

On Wednesday Cristina Fernandez left for a two day business trip to Angola, while Boudou on Tuesday traveled to Switzerland to accept a prize for Argentina at the International Telecommunication Union.

The provisional president of the Senate is the No. 3 position in the government and second in the line of succession.

Rojkes was elected to the Senate in 2009 to represent the northern province of Tucuman. Two years later she was appointed by CFK provisional president of the Senate. She became the first Jewish lawmaker and the first woman to hold the position.

Rojkes is married to Jose Alperovich, the governor of Tucuman, who was the first Jewish person in Argentina to be elected a governor and to be sworn in on a Jewish Bible.

Well Cristina is still the President, this woman is just doing some duties while she's away; but its still a good antidote to the idea that Argentina is some kind of antisemitic or Nazi state. Would Hitler have sent for a Jew from the camps and made them acting fuhrer when he went abroad?!

Still Anti-semitic, no I doubt it, no more than most places, anti-British perhaps.
Argentina closed its doors to jewish immigrants in 1938, it opened them several years later.
I don't know who this new lady is but she's bound to be better than Cristina...isn't she? surely?
