Argentine ambassador in the UK Alicia Castro, and daughter Miranda were received on Thursday by Pope Francis in a private audience.
The Ambassador presented His Holiness with an 18th-century map of America by the royal cartographer of France Rigobert Bonne; the book “Malvinas Matters”, recently published by the Embassy of Argentina in London, and a wicker cross made by Guaraní craftspeople.
In return, the Holy Father offered the Ambassador his Encyclical Evangelii Gaudium - which exhorts Christians to evangelize with Joy – as well as other religious symbols.
At the hour-long meeting, they discussed shared concerns regarding the global state of affairs, including inequality, violence caused by 'Islamophobia' and corruption in the upper echelons of power. They agreed on the importance of promoting a multipolar order that values autonomy and sovereignty, as well as the need to establish dialogue among nations.
Ambassador Castro stated that “Pope Francis’ spiritual leadership transcends the Catholic Church; it is universal. He is very aware of his role in a world rife with terrible conflicts that should be averted. He also has a strong message on the economy, condemning financial speculation, calling for a radical resolution to the problems of the poor and identifying inequality as the root cause of all social evils.
On Friday Ambassador Castro will also attend a Misa Criolla at St. Peter’s Basilica in honour of the Virgin of Guadalupe, patron of America.
