Chile's renews 'explicit' support for Argentina's Falklands/Malvinas claim

The Chilean government has renewed its 'explicit' support for Argentina's sovereignty claims over the Falklands/Malvinas Islands, according to Daniel Filmus, the Argentine official head of the special department for affairs relative to the Malvinas Islands, who is currently in a political tour in Santiago.

 “Both the Chilean foreign minister Heraldo Muñoz, as the presidents from the Lower House and the Senate have openly expressed their historic solidarity position towards Argentina in the Malvinas question”, said Filmus on Monday after visiting Congress together with Argentine ambassador in Santiago, Ginés González García.

According to Filmus both the foreign minister and Chilean lawmakers underlined “the importance of resolving the sovereignty dispute through dialogue, as established by UN Resolution 2065, which was passed half a century ago and the UK continues to refuse to comply”.

The so called Malvinas Solidarity Groups from South America met with minister Muñoz at the Foreign Ministry building in Santiago and later met with the Lower House president Marco Antonio Núñez, and the Senate leader Patricio Walker Prieto, at the old seat of the Chilean congress, according to a release from the Malvinas relative issues secretariat in Buenos Aires.

Once the meetings were over Filmus gave a conference on “Malvinas, Colonialism XXI century” at the Latin-American Social Sciences faculty, FLACSO. On Tuesday a similar seminar on the Malvinas question is scheduled with other Malvinas solidarity groups, according to the release.
