    Peru: Boluarte undergoes cabinet reshuffle

    Peruvian President Dina Boluarte Sunday took the oath of office from four new ministers. Particularly striking was the appointment of Daniel Maurate to replace José Tello on the same day that former President Alejandro Toledo was brought in from the United States to stand trial for influence peddling and money laundering in a spinoff of the Odebrecht scandal. Tello had dubbed Toledo a “criminal.”

    Toledo faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted

    Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo turned himself in to US authorities Friday and is to remain in custody pending his extradition to the South American country, which is scheduled for Sunday on a commercial flight to Lima, where he will be housed at the Barbadillo prison alongside his former colleagues Alberto Fujimori and Pedro Castillo.

    US Judge orders arrest of former Peruvian President Toledo pending extradition

    Toledo, 77, was President of Peru between 2001 and 2006

    US Federal Judge Thomas Hixson ordered former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo to surrender to marshalls in the Californian city of San Jose next Friday, April 21, at 9 am local time for his extradition to Lima to face corruption charges in another spinoff of the Odebrecht case in his country. In the meantime, Toledo will be housed in a jail in the Californian county of San Mateo.

    Toledo is looking at a spell at Lima's Barbadillo prison alongside former colleagues Alberto Fujimori and Pedro Castillo

    A US judge Wednesday ordered the arrest of former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo Manrique, who is said to have received millions of dollars in bribes in exchange for awarding works to the Brazilian company Odebrecht. The Court revoked Toledo's parole and ruled him taken into custody to proceed with his extradition to his country, where he faces charges of corruption.

    Peru: Motion to impeach Boluarte fails to get through Congress

    Boluarte said the motion to impeach was an “obscure political maneuver”

    Peru's one-house Congress Tuesday dismissed a motion to impeach President Dina Boluarte for “moral incapacity” by 64 votes to 37, and 10 abstentions. A reconsideration mooted immediately afterward was also rejected by 67 votes to 34 and, again, 10 abstentions. In view of these results, Congress Speaker José Williams ordered the case shelved.

    The former president faces up to 32 years in jail, Judge Chuckley argued

    Peruvian Supreme Court Justice Juan Carlos Checkley Thursday extended former President Pedro Castillo Terrones' pre-trial detention to 36 months. The former head of state is held at the Barbadillo Prison next to fellow former President Alberto Fujimori after being impeached for trying to close Congress and rule by decree. Castillo is also under investigation for acts of corruption committed during his time in office.

    Peru lifts state of emergency in Lima

    Violence in the country's capital has subsided, Otárola said

    The Peruvian Government Thursday lifted the state of emergency decreed in Lima amid mounting violence since the Dec. 7 impeachment of then-President Pedro Castillo Terrones, Prime Minister Alberto Otárola announced. Castillo's government had also decreed a state of emergency in Lima and its neighboring province of Callao to combat crime.

    Peru's Judiciary Monday rejected a habeas corpus request filed by former President Pedro Castillo Terrones' legal counselors to spare the former head of state the 18 months' pre-trial detention he has been sentenced to pending a resolution on the case against him for trying to dissolve Congress and rule by decree.
