Chavez praises defence cooperation with Argentina, making Mercosur a military power block
President Hugo Chavez underlined the significance of the defence cooperation memorandum signed between Venezuela and Argentina which is part of “the necessary strategic integration of the armed forces in the framework of Mercosur and turning the block into a military power”.
“It is an important strategic alliance to lift the immense offensive, dissuasive capacity from the block which begins at the Caribbean and reaches Patagonia and the Argentine Malvinas Islands, which are now our Islas Malvinas, they are now a regional claim”, underlined Chavez.
Last Friday the defence ministers from Argentina and Venezuela signed in the port of La Guaira on board Argentina’s tall ship ARA Libertad a memorandum of understanding which refers to the training, capability and military manufacturing technology as part of the “necessary strategic integration of the Armed Forces in the framework of Mercosur”.
During a military ceremony over the weekend at the Military University, Chavez also underlined the significance of Venezuela‘s incorporation to Mercosur, the block which he also described as “a military power in the region”.
Chavez boasted that despite repeated efforts from the Venezuelan bourgeois and the Paraguayan congress, “they missed the shot because now we are the Armed Forces of Mercosur: a great economic and geo-political impact for the region to help defend our resources, combat colonialism”.
However the Venezuelan leader also spoke about the need to consolidate the region as a democratic, anti-colonialist space of democracies where the peoples prevail.
“We must consolidate a great peace zone in the Caribbean and in South America; a zone of democracy where never again will there be military coups, or invasion or imperialisms, but also a space where only our peoples in their most pure democratic expression and through legitimate governments can decide their future”.

What is the tactical value of having a military bloc within a military bloc?
Presumably the Mercosur military bloc can go to war without reference to Unasur.
CFK/Chavez might decide to 'tidy-up' frontier anomalies -
reverting PA and UR to Argentina & Brasil, thereby reducing the number of SA countries by two, by 'unification'.
They might also decide to use the combined might of the Mercosur AR/BR/VE ( with 'guest appearence' from the Cuban military) military machines to swamp and finish off the Falkland Islands once and for all. This would be not too difficult, as the UK would not use nuclear weapons. This could only be countered by third party support - USA, FR, NATO,etc.
Russia and China would, as usual, stop the UN from intervening.
Definitely the end of a brighter future for the big beasts of South America, and a worrying time for the 'minnows'.

ps Mercosur is a trade bloc. Some Europeans have tried to turn a European trade bloc into a political alliance, and it has not worked conspicuously well so far.
I do wonder what the average Argentine thinks of CFKChavez throwing their army in with Hugo. In the past when I asked Argentines about Chavez and his appearances at Mercosur summits they general answer was that he is a clown with a big ego. The word 'clown' came up a lot.

What new agreements? Argentine military academies have been training Latin American cadets for years. There is nothing new here. I have no idea what was the purpose of the Argentine Defense Minister to Venezuela, but only speculation on my part. Maybe it was as a personal envoy to convey the message to cool it with Syria and Iran. Maybe to acquire the aging 21 F-16 that Venezuela has, something that the US would be interested in since Chavez is threatening to send them to Iran. Argentina has to retire the fleet of Mirage F-III in two years’ time regardless if they have a replacement or not.
All the posters talking about a potential Argentine military intervention in the Falklands (Malvinas,) get real! With what? With the Argentine “dis-armed” forces? Even if Argentina had a modern one, it is unconstitutional. The Argentine Constitution (1994) establishes very clearly that the claim should be pursued peacefully through international organizations respecting the Kelpers way of life. If Argentina decided to use force, anyone can go to any court, which would have no choice but to rule the act unconstitutional unleashing a constitutional crisis in a middle of a war. That scenario is just crazy. Argentina will have to amend its Constitution first. This is a process of at least two years which includes a national referendum.

Chavez is a clown, imho. However, Venezuela has the largest oil reserves in the world. Argentina has the land and water supply, it is an agricultural powerhouse. In addition, they keep drilling for oil in Patagonia and keep striking underground rivers. Argentina can double its arable land. Brazil has 200 million people. If Bolivia, with the second largest natural gas reserves in South America, becomes a full member of Mercosur! Wow! Do not forget that Argentina has the third largest shale natural gas and lithium reserves in the world. With food stuff, water supply, and fuel in abundance, the economic future is ours. We do not need to embark in military adventures.
