    China expanding its investments in Argentina's South Atlantic fisheries

    Argentina's head of Fisheries department is in Shanghai and met with private companies and government officials

    China is interested in investing in Argentine port infrastructure and in setting up companies with access to the South Atlantic fisheries, according to reports from Shanghai where an Argentine top level delegation is currently negotiating in the framework of the China-Argentina cooperation agreement.

    New Zealand increases hoki TAAC following successful stock conservation management

    ”This shows the success of our world-leading quota management system (QMS). It is flexible and driven by science”, said Minister Nathan Guy.

    The Deepwater Group says the increase in the total allowable commercial catch (TACC) for hoki shows the benefits of a long term commitment to build biomass in this major New Zealand fishery. An increase in the hoki catch, from 150,000 to 160,000 tons, was announced on at the Seafood Industry Conference in Wellington by the Minister for Primary Industries Nathan Guy.

    Pescanova seems to be turning around following a severe financial purge

    According to the official document, Pescanova’s sales totaled 434 million Euros between January and June 2014

    The approval of the creditors’ agreement considering reductions over 90% of the debt helped the Galician multinational firm Pescanova achieve a net profit of EUR 1,790 million in the first half of this year. The six-month accounts submitted to the Spanish National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) show the cancellation of the firm’s bulky insolvency has meant the entry of EUR 2,3 million, which in the accounts figure as income.

    Red tide devastates mussel growing and canning industry in Galicia

    “It has pretty much stopped all activities at the 67 plants in Galicia because we only process local production” said Juan Manuel Vieites from ANFACO.

    The presence of the lipophilic toxin in the Galician estuaries, (northwest Spain) has caused the closure of almost all Galician mussel polygons and forced the closure of activities in the local canning industry. The red tide is currently blocking 90% of the rafts production, since only two polygons located in Betanzos and four in Redondela are open, reported Atlantico news.

    Chilean lawmakers approve initiative to ban trawling in territorial waters

    “Gradually reducing the effort of trawling is a presidential commitment, where marine ecosystems harmed by trawling also benefit,” pointed out Machuca.

    The House of Representatives approved this week a draft agreement to ban trawling in Chile. With 55 votes in support, six against and five abstentions, the deputies voted in favor of the Draft Resolution No. 100, which requests the Executive to submit a legislative initiative to amend Article 49 of Act No. 18,892 in order to ban fish catching by trawling.

    EU sanctions 10 countries for overfishing with reduction of fishing quotas

    “If we want to be serious in our fight against overfishing, we need to apply our rules by the book, and respect of quotas” said Commissioner Damanaki.

    The European Commission (EC) has decided to sanction Spain and nine other Member States for exceeding their fishing quotas during the past financial year, and reduce their fishing opportunities for 2014. This measure is intended to repair the damage caused to resources and in this way ensure the sustainable capture of resources.

    Uruguay fisheries exports reach 33.921 tons in first half of the year

    Hake and croaker were the main export items

    Uruguay fisheries exports during the first half of the year reached 33.921 tons, which represent a 13.2% increase over the same period a year ago, while in money terms sales totaled 76.6 million dollars, up 17.7%, according to the latest release from Aquatic Resources National Office, DINARA, published in the official government portal.
