    Prime Minister Theresa May suffered two major defeats on Wednesday after a majority of the upper House of Parliament adopted an amendment supporting continued membership in the EU customs union after Brexit. The amendment to the EU Withdrawal Bill, which passed by 348 votes to 225, forces the government to report to Parliament by Oct. 31 on what steps it has taken to remain in the customs union.

    IMF warning on global debt and financial stability: US and China targeted

    The IMF's assessment of the general economic outlook, published on Tuesday, was fairly upbeat for the near term.

    The International Monetary Fund says that high global debt is a concern. In a new report, the IMF says governments should use the current strong economic growth to strengthen their finances. The organization also says that risks to global financial stability have increased.

    Britain and the US have issued a formal alert about “malicious cyber activity” by Russia amid warnings that relations with Moscow have hit an all-time low.     Chinese economy expands at an annual rate of 6.8% in the first quarter, says Beijing

    The growth figures come amid concerns about China's outlook for exports which has been clouded by rising tensions with the US, its largest trading partner.

    China's economy grew at an annual pace of 6.8% in the first quarter compared to the same period last year, according to official data, beating forecasts for the period. The growth figures for January to March were also above Beijing's 2018 annual growth target of “around 6.5%”

    China opens its car manufacturing and market to foreign ownership

    China will remove foreign ownership caps for companies making electric and hybrid cars in 2018, commercial vehicles in 2020 and the wider  market by 2022.

    China will allow full foreign ownership of car firms by 2022 in a move that could open up the world's biggest car market. The plans will change rules that require global carmakers to work through state-owned partners. The US says this forces them to share technology with potential competitors.

    OAS mission will observe the Mexican elections of July first

    Mexican foreign minister Luis Videgaray, emphasized that “the observation of the OAS will no doubt be a fundamental contribution to this electoral process.”
