    Falklands celebrates the growing success of the tourism industry

    The biggest cheer of the night greeted the announcement that Jenny Luxton had won the Executive. Director’s Award for outstanding contribution to tourism.

    Government House was a welcoming venue on Tuesday night for the presentation of the Falkland Islands Tourist Board’s annual awards. In addition to the hopeful contenders from across the industry there were most of the 28 newly qualified tour guides waiting to receive certificates.

    President Macri recognized as first World Leader for Travel & Tourism

    President Mauricio Macri of Argentina was recognized by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) at its first World Leader for Travel & Tourism. The recognition was announced at the opening ceremony of the 2018 WTTC Global Summit which is taking place on 18 and 19 April in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

    First opening of the QE2 floating hotel in Dubai

    QE2, has just gone through 2.7 million man-hours of transformation and is now permanently docked at Mina Rashid in Dubai.

    The UAE’s new floating hotel, Queen Elizabeth 2, will be opening its doors to the public soon, and ahead of the big day, some images have emerged of what the refurbished cruise ship will look like inside. The once world-renowned ocean liner that sailed the oceans for years, also known as QE2, has just gone through 2.7 million man-hours of transformation and is now permanently docked at Mina Rashid in Dubai.

    UK new rules for package holiday sickness cases to deter false claims

    The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) said there were about 35,000 claims over holiday sickness in 2016, a 500% rise since 2013.

    United Kingdom legal costs for package holiday sickness cases will be fixed under new rules aimed at deterring false claims. Similar controls are in place for other personal injury claims, but they will now be extended to cases when holidaymakers seek compensation. The travel industry says claims have mushroomed in recent years despite illness in resorts declining.

    Argentines tourists flocked mainly to Brazil in January 2018

    Of the 377.000 overseas tourists, 32.5% travelled to Brazil, 15.1% to US and Canada, and 10.8% to Europe

    January is summer month in Argentina, equivalent to July in the northern hemisphere, and Argentines love to take to the beaches or travel overseas. This last January, according to the official stats office, Indec, the number of arrived tourists in Argentina increased 8.7% compared to a year ago, but Argentines tourists overseas jumped 20.5%., most probably on the back of a particularly strong Peso vis-a-vis the US dollar.

    Cancelled Machu Picchu airport triggers international dispute between Peru and contractors

    The proposed Chinchero airport was aimed at helping tourists get to and from the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu, near the city of Cusco in southeastern Peru.

    The Peruvian-Argentine consortium Kuntur Wasi said that it plans to sue Peru in an international arbitration court after failing to reach a deal with the government over the cancellation of its US$525 million Chinchero airport project.

    Attended by 500 participants from different countries the Awards Ceremony, emphasized how tourism has embraced sustainable and innovative approaches.

    Turismo de Portugal I.P (Portugal), Ecotourism Trust (India), Tryponyu (Indonesia) and SEGGITUR (Spain) are the winners of the 14th Edition of the UNWTO Awards for Innovation in Tourism. Fourteen projects among 128 applicants from 55 countries were selected as finalists of the 14th UNWTO Awards for Innovation in Tourism.
