Sir Robin Christopher, former Ambassador in Jakarta and Addis Ababa has been appointed as new Ambassador in Argentina. He will replace William Mardsen who is retiring from the diplomatic service and will be leaving Argentina next month.
Sir Robin Christopher will take his post next November.

The announcement was made public by Argentine Foreign Affairs Minister Adalberto Rodriguez Giavarini last Friday during a brief visit to Ushuaia.

According to the Argentine press, Rodriguez Giavarini said that relations with the United Kingdom are "optimum, and very active; what subsists is a crucial issue, sovereignty over the Islands which we express in every meeting we have".

Rodriguez Giavarini in a press conference before returning to Buenos Aires denied any official policy of colder relations in discussions concerning the Islanders, (as reported in the Argentine press), and underlined "we have very good relations in all fields, with a substantive difference that persists".

The Argentine official also considered very positive and cordial the fact that London had named two Argentine businessmen as consuls in Córdoba and Mendoza.

According to "La Nación", Rodriguez Giavarini promised Tierra del Fuego Governor, Carlos Manfredotti that the opinion of Argentina's most southerly province will be taken into account in "actions relating to foreign policy concerning Malvinas".

Finally regarding Falklands and Sir Robin Christopher, journalists in the press conference recalled that the only human character in the Winnie the Pooh Walt Disney comic is named?guess, Christopher Robin. It seems that the spirit of Mr. Di Tella's eclectic attitudes is still around.
