During last weeks Planning and Building Committee meeting Chief Fire Officer David Ford displayed photographs taken after the fire at the house of Mr Zane Hirtle last Tuesday. He said that important lessons should be learnt from the use of combustible timber and hardboard wall and ceiling linings. He added, "this allowed rapid spread of fire." He also pointed out the significant danger of storing gas cylinders inside buildings. The 123rd meeting of the committee was chaired by the Honourable Norma Edwards and attended by the Honourable Sharon Halford, Mr Brian Summers, Mr Jim Moffatt, Mr Ben Claxton and Mr Riki Evans.

Moto Cross Circuit Discussed at PBC

The establishment of a moto-cross circuit just off the MPA Road at the Ponds was also discussed during the latest meeting of the Planning and Building Committee. It was reported that there had been no planning permission nor a building permit in respect of this and the Portakabin sited at the track. The Environmental Planning Officer said he would be in contact with the organisers to discuss matters such as spectator safety and the satisfactory provision of car parking. He said he was hopeful of getting a formal application to the committee for the necessary consents quite soon.

Professor Multanovskiy in Stanley

The cruise vessel, Professor Multanovskiy arrived in Stanley early this morning for a short visit lasting most of the day. Carrying 50 people on board she yesterday visited West Point Island and Carcass Island. Leaving FIPASS at 4.30 this afternoon she will head towards Antarctica for the next phase of the cruise. The vessel is next scheduled to visit the Falklands on 15 March.

First Meeting of Falkland Islands Development Board

The first meeting of the Falkland Islands Development Board will be held this Thursday. The committee, which was formed on 1 January, succeeds the FIDC Executive Board, will incorporate the work of the Agricultural Committee. According to Fiona Didlick of FIDC business to be discussed at the meeting will include a report on the visit of Christian Simon, the desk officer responsible for the Falklands in the development office of the European Union in Brus
