Fascinating interview with Julian Thompson
A fascinating interview with Major General Julian Thompson was held yesterday evening in FIBS by Lisa Riddell, Editor of the Penguin News. The Major General answered questions about his involvement in the 1982 conflict. Talking about the time running up to the invasion; he then went on to discuss the journey from UK to Ascension and onto the Falkland Islands. He described in some detail the landings, the Argentine capability and why Port San Carlos was chosen. Julian Thompson praised Ewen Susby Taylier, a Royal Marine Officer who had a good knowledge of the island saying that his intelligence played a large part in their success. Lisa Riddell posed questions about the sinking of the Atlantic Conveyor, battles such as Two Sisters and Tumbledown right through to the Argentine surrender. The Major General recalls how he heard Lisa Riddell finally asked him about his thoughts on the July 14th agreement asking whether it felt like a betrayal to the men who died. The first part of this interview will be published in The Penguin News this Friday and the full interview will be broadcast on FIBS this Sunday evening at ten past six as a special one to one.
Sir Rex Argentine talk planned
Another interesting evening this week is when Sir Rex Hunt gives his public talk on "The night the Argentines Invaded" . This will be held in the Geography room at Falkland Islands Community School tomorrow evening at 6pm. Sir Rex and Lady Hunt have been in the islands since the 27th of January and since last Thursday they've been visiting Port Howard, Little Chartres and Fox Bay they're now due back in Stanley today on the islander.
Indian Earthquake Appeal Update
Standard Chartered Bank have announced that the Indian Earthquake Appeal fund is currently at £640.00. Fundraising events will include a tea party at the Brasserie tomorrow afternoon, which Mrs Lynda Lamont will be attending. This is open to members of the public and proceeds will go to the Appeal fund.
