The Public Works Department Committee met this morning in Gilbert House. Discussions took place regarding the 1 million pound project from Social Services to build 18 new units plus a central facility for the new Sheltered Accommodation. Suggested sites were, the dockyard, the Triangle and the Old HQBFII area. The dockyard site was said to be restrictive due to structural problems and The Environmental Planning officer aired concerns about the Triangle site ? this he said was another open space of Stanley being taking up. He asked why, the accommodation had to be in one area rather than spread out, possibly building some on the East Falkland Development. It was eventually proposed that the decision of site should be returned to Executive Council.
The Director of Public Works confirmed that the new police station site will be behind the power station as originally planned and Ross Road is to be reconstructed in its entirety with a budget of £200,000 per year. The MPA road plans seemed to be no further on as PWD said they were awaiting a designer consultant arriving in March to establish which option would be the most suitable. £500,000 to purchase specialist equipment is set aside however and a further £1 million planned for the next four to five years.
Discussions over the delayed town plan took place as most current projects current and future works depended on its completion, The Environmental Planning Officer thought that time would be set aside to concentrate on the completion of this.
A buildings update confirmed that the new FIDF building was on hold pending a review and the abbatoir was progressing satisfactorily as was the new visitor centre.
It was reported that a heating and ventilation expert will be hired to examine the apparent design problems in the swimming pool at the leisure centre, and there was agreement that general maintenance of all government buildings was a positive step.
Future plans for the power station were raised as it was said that as Stanley expands, the capacity will need to be increased. Wind generators, which will be allocated next to the new abbatoir, would provide only 8 to 10% of the power required.
And lastly, reports that sewerage was being let out into Stanley Harbour from the East Stanley Development were explained by an emergency overflow system ? Mike Forrest assured islanders, that PWD would deal with any problems immediately if they contacted
