Councillors Opinions on UK General Election.

With the general election less than a week away in the United Kingdom, Falkland Islands Councillors agree with the polls and generally think that the next UK government will be a Labour one.

On a personal basis Councillor Richard Cockwell said he would like the party to serve another term, as his view is that the Conservative Party is in disarray at the moment. Adding they are not ready to lead the country. He said he doesn't think the Falkland Islanders need to worry about their rights to self-determination under Labour.

Councillor Sharon Halford was more guarded saying she doesn't mind which party wins the election as Falkland Island Councillors will be able to work with whoever is elected. These were sentiments echoed by Councillor John Birmingham who said FIG would be happy and able to work with any party.

Councillor Bill Luxton said it would be immaterial who gets into power as the Falkland Islands has many friends on both main parties. Adding that Labour was as staunch in defending our right to Self-determination as the conservatives ever were.

Councillor Jan Cheek said she would like to see whoever the British public elects in power. She doesn't mind who wins, as in spite of the election hype she believes there is little between Labour and the Conservatives on important issues.

Councillor Mike Summers was one of just three who gave a clear to answer who he would like to see win the general election. He said he would like labour to win but with a significantly reduced majority. Adding as few as 20 would oblige new labour to have a good deal more respect for Parliament and proved a stronger and more confident opposition. Asked why he responded in this manner, Councillor Summers said he has been satisfied with Labours foreign policy, clearly our most important area.

Furthermore that Falkland Islands Councillors have been able to form good working relationships with the secretary of sate and successive ministers with responsibility for Falklands affairs.
