January first the free trade agreement between United States and Chile became effective, an agreement that hopefully will double Chilean exports to the US in the coming six years.
Chile, a non permanent member of the Security Council, will be sponsoring a debate on the national reconciliation processes of those countries that have suffered tragic conflicts.
According to Ambassador Muñoz the UN invests many resources in solving conflicts, but forgets the follow up reconciliation process.
"That is why political, ethnic and social fractures which caused the original conflict re-emerge, forcing the UN to re-invest fresh resources in the same conflict", explained Ambassador Muñoz.
Representatives from countries that have gone through this process such as South Africa will be participating, as well as Chile itself that after seventeen years of the return to democracy has a divided community.
Ambassador Muñoz will also be addressing terrorism and sanctions to groups such as Al Qaida and the Talibans.
Actually Mr. Muñoz presides over the terrorist group sanctions committee and will be handing a report on the issue later this month.
