A category 1 hurricane is building up in the southern coast of Brazil, a development that has taken by surprise the meteorologists from the Miami Hurricanes Centre because it's the first time such a phenomenon occurs in the South Atlantic.

"We're really before a historic event", reported this Saturday weather forecaster Paola Elorza from Channel 23 in Miami.

The surprise appearance of the hurricane 500 kilometres east of Porto Alegre in the state of Rio Grande do Sul next to Uruguay, left the phenomenon without a name.

Since hurricanes began being tracked by satellites in 1960, "this is the first time we've seen something like this", admitted Robbie Berg from the Hurricanes Centre in Miami.

The anonymous phenomenon in the South Atlantic was rated 1 in the five Saffir-Simpson scale given the 95 miles winds surrounding it.

According to the Hurricane Centre in Miami this hurricane seems compact with a clearly defined front and probably built up during last week. It's 500 kilometres offshore Porto Alegre and will generate strong rainfall adds the Hurricane Centre.

The north Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1 and extends until November 30.
