Unemployment in Chile reached 8,7% during the February-April quarter after experiencing a 0,2% increase compared to the same period a year ago and 0,6% over the previous quarter.
According to the Chilean Statistics Office the end of the summer farming season and related activities plus a growing number of people looking for jobs for the first time as the economy picks up, has a direct incidence in the latest figures.
This means that there are 538.290 Chileans out of a job, with the north of the country and metropolitan areas suffering the greatest increase impact.
However the number of people employed registered a 1,2% increase which means the economy in that period created 69,030 new jobs.
