THE Falkland Islands Languages Organisation (FILO) said goodbye to its first overseas students on Saturday.

Shearing contractor, Patricio Barría and secretary, Mónica González, both from Punta Arenas, were presented with their certificates on Friday evening by Course Director, John Fowler, after completing three weeks intensive training in English.

Originally they had signed up for a two week course at FILO's Barrack Street premises, but later decided to stay on for an extra week to consolidate what they had learned.

According to Mr Fowler, the pair had worked very hard during the time available and proved to be excellent students.

Teaching English to overseas students has always been the principal focus of the school, Mr Fowler said, and he hopes that the students returning to Punta would give a good report of their time in the Falklands to encourage others to follow their example.

He said, "As the nearest English speaking community to Latin America, the Falklands was well placed to engage in an activity, which in other parts of the world had become a major attraction for visitors."
