Argentina called on all former 1982 Malvinas war combatants to register in the First National Census of War Veterans.

"Register. To help you, we need to know you", said the text of the half page add published in Argentina's main newspapers.

"Twenty two years ago those who gave their utmost for the Motherland are claiming, and rightfully, an answer to the problems they face in life after the experience of war. Today with an active and present Government, the federal administration has begun working to offer the contentment which they need".

Further on it says that "a fair, integral and transparent solution needs in depth information on your social, work and health conditions and of your family group".

Malvinas veterans claim that over 250 of their ranks have committed suicide since the end of the conflict in June 1982 and complain bitterly that there are thousands of fake veterans who regularly collect a subsidy which they do not deserve.

The census was announced last July 21 by Argentine Home Secretary Anibal Fernandez following a meeting with Malvinas veterans who were camping for months in a tent in Plaza de Mayo, just across government house, Casa Rosada.

A total of 649 Argentine and 255 British servicemen died during the 74 days conflict in the South Atlantic.
