Mexican candidate for OAS Secretary General

Salvadoran President Antonio Saca said in Miami that Central America will unite behind one candidate for the Organization of American States, OAS, Secretary General post but refused to comment the candidacy of Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Ernesto Derbez.

"All those who want to run have the right to do so; (Derbez' candidacy) is a decision of Mexico and we are going to respect it", said President Saca, adding that when "the moment to elect (a leader) comes, the region's presidents will make that decision".

Following his address to the 28th annual Caribbean-Central American Action Conference (CCAA), President Saca avoided further comments on the fact that Salvador also has proposed its won candidate, former president Francisco Flores.

"We have a candidate elected by Central America and we are supporting him. Here the important thing is to seek the votes, and the person who can obtain them will be the OAS secretary general" insisted Mr. Saca. Central America decided to support a single candidate for the OAS chief at the 14th Ibero-American Summit held in Costa Rica last November. The Caribbean Basin Conference is being attended by attended by eight Caribbean and Central American leaders and more than 800 representatives from the public and private sectors.
