Venezuela officially announced it supports Chilean Minister of Interior Jose Miguel Insulza as candidate for the post of Secretary General of the Organization of American States, OAS.

This, however, does not mean we underestimate the merits and conditions of such personalities as Mexican Foreign Affairs Minister Luis Ernesto Derbez (another hopeful candidate), plus the fact that relations between Mexico and Venezuela have been and remain excellent, added the official announcement.

"In Venezuela we're convinced that the new realities of our continent impose us to work for the unity of our peoples and with the intensity that our problems claim.

We're certain that all countries will unite behind Mr. Insulza, in a demonstration of unity and willingness to overcome the obstacles which in the past have impeded integration processes to combat poverty to advance at the required speed".

Besides Mr. Insulza and Mexican Foreign Affairs Minister Derbez, several Central American countries are supporting former El Salvador president Flores.
