Former Argentine President Carlos Menem plans to run for a seat in the Senate from the northern Argentine province of La Rioja, which he governed for nine years.

Argentina's legislative elections are scheduled for October.

The announcement was made by the former president's brother, Sen. Eduardo Menem, who did not say whether Carlos Menem would run under the banner of the Peronist Party, with which he was affiliated for decades.

Menem, who was born in La Rioja 74 years ago, was elected governor of the province in 1973.

His term in office was interrupted by the 1976 military coup.

With the return of democracy in 1983, Menem went back to his native province and governed it until 1989.

He was president of Argentina from 1989 to 1999.

The former president is trying to regain his standing in the Argentine political world.

Menem returned to Argentina on Dec. 22 after remaining in Chile almost a year while Argentine courts opened investigations into allegations of corruption in his administration.
