Martin Andrew Garvie, well known teacher and school principal at schools in Buenos Aires, was included in the 2005 New Year Honours list with an MBE, awarded by the British Crown, for services to education and English language teaching in Argentina.
Martin Garvie was born in 1937 in Buenos Aires. He was Housemaster and Director of Studies at St George's College, Quilmes, and then headmaster of St Hilda's College, Hurlingham, between 1980 and 2001.
At St Hilda's he guided the school into a new period of growth and development and furthered bilingual education in Argentina.
In 1994 he was invited to membership of the Argentine Ad Hoc Committee which, with the Argentine Embassy in London, organised the unveiling of the statue of General San Martín, in Belgrave Square.
Martin Garvie is an honourary member of the Latin American Heads Conference, an institution which he helped establish, serving on its Founding Committee and an honorary member of the English Speaking Scholastic Association of the River Plate (ESSARP). He is a member of the executive committee of the English Speaking Union of Argentina.
At present he is the head of English studies at Colegio San Antonio, in San Antonio de Areco, Buenos Aires province.
He will receive his award at Buckingham Palace, in London, on July 13. (BAH)
