Falkland Islands Councillors in an official release praised Monday former Foreign Secretary Robin Cook whom they described as “an honest politician and a man of great conscience and integrity”.

The official release from Gilbert House follows:

"Councillors were shocked and saddened to hear of the untimely death of Robin Cook. The former Foreign Secretary will be remembered for his close association with the 1999 White Paper, "Partnership for Progress and Prosperity". The document upholds the right to self-determination and promotes the constant development of democratic government in each of the Overseas Territories according to their current status. It also formalized the transition from Dependent Territories to Overseas Territories, recognising the now non-dependent status of most of them.

Councillors have described Mr Cook as an honest politician and a man of great conscience and integrity, with whom they worked closely during the negotiations which led to the British-Argentine Joint Statement of July 1999.

Mr Cook will be remembered by many in the Islands and will be sadly missed. A letter of condolence has been sent to his widow".
