MAERSK España, the Spanish subsidiary of Danish shipping giant Maersk will invest Euro 48 million this year in new cranes and container handling equipment for its dedicated terminal in Algeciras, across from Gibraltar.

The investment is part of a drive to squeeze as much additional capacity as possible from an already saturated terminal.

The facility handled 3.2 million containers year, practically all of the port's container traffic.

The company hopes that the new equipment, coupled with studies on improved handling techniques, will increase annual capacity to 4.1 million containers by 2007.
