The creation of a Parliamentarian Observatory on the Malvinas issue with the purpose of debating and promoting academic activities linked to sovereignty aspects of the Islands was passed Thursday by the (Argentine) Lower House and is en route of approval by the Senate, reports the Buenos Aires press.

The observatory will be headed by Deputy Jorge Argüello (belonging to President Kirchner's faction), who presides over the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Lower House and will have seven representatives from different parties and a matching number of academics from Argentine universities linked to the Malvinas question. The initiative was sponsored by the president of the Lower House, Deputy Alberto Balestrini; Mr. Argüello; first vice president of the Foreign Affairs Committee Federico Storani (Radical Party); Carlos Ruckauf belonging to the Federal Peronism and Federico Pinedo from PRO. The initiative which was unanimously passed in the Lower House has the purpose of "working with the different (academic) congresses that are following up on Argentina's claim before the United Nations Decolonization Committee and also on those which haven't yet", said Deputy Argüello. "The idea is to send a forceful signal regarding the national will over Malvinas", added Argüello
