Birkenhead based Northwestern Shiprepairers and Shipbuilders has won a £16million contract to upgrade naval repair ship RFA Diligence which has seen service all over the world including the Falkland Islands.

The deal will secure more than 100 jobs at Northwestern, which is based in part of the former Cammell Laird dry docks.

The firm will upgrade the accommodation areas, galley and propulsion system of the 10.000 tons Diligence which should service her through to the middle of next decade.

John Syvret, managing director of Northwestern, said the contract "underpins the company's growing reputation for managing extremely complex projects to time and budget" and added that the company is actively tendering for other significant projects.
